Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (1997) UPDATED

Postby Paul_Rudoff » 31 Oct 2024 21:38

Since this is a DVD correction and a Blu-ray addition, both for Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (1997), I wasn't sure if I should break this up into two posts or one. I figured I'd go with one since there's not much here.

1. DVD CORRECTION

The Special Edition from 2011 (U.S. release) has been reformatted into 1.78:1. It is NOT in 1.33:1, like the original DVD (and VHS) release. I don't have the original release to be able to compare aspect ratios, to know if the 1.78:1 is a crop or open matte. That will need to be investigated by someone else.

Here are some images as proof; photographed off the TV screen:

2. BLU-RAY ADDITION

There are two Blu-ray + DVD combo packs (for the U.S.). There's the 2011 "Special Edition" (already listed) and then there's a 2016 release with no special subtitle for it. For reasons I cannot comprehend, the 2016 release is NOT a repackaging of the 2011 Special Edition release. It contains a completely NEW, albeit slightly altered, DVD. The Blu-ray disc is the exact same as the 2011 disc, but the DVD disc strips out all of the bonus features! It retains the same main menu, but if you go to "Bonus Features" on it, instead of having everything that was on the 2011 DVD disc, you just get "Sing Along with the Movie" (a subtitle track that just has song lyrics in it) - which is hardly a bonus feature, in my opinion.

I have no idea why Disney didn't use both 2011 discs for the 2016 release. There was no need to author a new DVD, which has the same movie specs. So, all you guys need to do here is duplicate the 2011 info, change the date to 2016, and note that the DVD disc only has the on-screen lyrics. All of the bonus features are on the Blu-ray disc ONLY in the 2016 Blu-ray + DVD release.

Here are photos of the 2016 Blu-ray + DVD release I have:

I hope that isn't too confusing :-)
