Thanks, but a few tweaks/questions, since you own the disc.

Jerry_Dam wrote:Anamorphic?: Yes
PAL or NTSC?: PAL

There are no "anamorphic" (Blu-ray titles are actually non-anamorphic if it comes to that) or "NTSC/PAL" when it comes to HD films. Some (usually not shot in film) titles and extras can be 1080i/50 or 1080i/60, though. So we only need this type of info with the DVD titles.

Of course some extras on Blu-ray discs can be in NTSC or PAL, especially if they port some old extras from the older DVDs.

Jerry_Dam wrote:Picture: 1080p

We need HD codec. I assume it's AVC, but can you check?

Jerry_Dam wrote:Subtitles (are they optional?): Fnnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandish

Since this is Scandinavian release, I assume that also Danish subtitles are included? Can you check? Some Scandinavian releases have also Icelandic subs like you've listed, but not always. Usually Dan, Fin, Nor and Swe are included (the same release is distributed in all of these countries with the different cover).

Jerry_Dam wrote:Cuts: Theatrical (DISC 1, 126 mins) + Extended Cut (DISC 2, 131 mins)

We need a proper running times from the disc. E.g. Disc 1, 126:27. Can you check?

Jerry_Dam wrote:"Behind the scenes" (16 mins) (edited from the 52 mins Making Of)
"Into the Battle" (7 mins)
"Real Action Heroes (7 Mins)
"Action for Hire" (7 mins)

Again, we need a proper running times. It's also good to remember that sometimes different licensors and companies can remove/shorten or add something when it comes the extras, so copy-and-paste the specs from the US release doesn't necessarily apply e.g. to the Scandinavian release.

So next time, just take your time when adding specs. It saves time. :)

I'll check. Still not sure how to check codec but will look into it.

Didn't know that but I'm not sure to understand how then...

or "NTSC/PAL" when it comes to HD films. Some (usually not shot in film) titles and extras can be 1080i/50 or 1080i/60, though. So we only need this type of info with the DVD titles.
That I know but I wasn't sure what to put since asked anyway...

Ah yeah Danish is the one I forgot will check if they're all there or if I confused Danish and Icelandish...

Usually you just hit "display" (BD player) from your remote. It shows various info, including the codec. Some releases can be VC-1 (even MPEG-2 with some of the older titles), but most of the newer ones are AVC. All DVDs are MPEG-2 (we don't need that info with DVDs, though).

Some films shot on video (or many concert videos on Blu-ray) can be in 1080i/50 or 1080i/60. Most films shot on film or with newer HD cameras are in 1080p/24 on Blu-ray. There are some exceptions of course.

My point was that we don't need "anamorphic/non-anamorphic" info with Blu-ray titles. But it's true that some of the EXTRAS (not talking about the actual film here) can be in HD (1080p/24, 1080i/50 or 1080i/60) OR even in SD (PAL or NTSC). Most tv-sets and Blu-ray players in Europe support both 1080i/50 or 60 - and both PAL and NTSC, BUT most tv-sets and Blu-ray players in the US only support 1080i/60 and NTSC. This is the reason why people in the US can't always watch Blu-ray titles that has 1080i/50 or PAL material, even when the actual disc is "region free".

Perhaps a bit OT, but anyway.

The most recently authored BD I've seen that used VC-1 was the 2011 "The Thing" prequel. That codec is history, AVC has squarely won the codec war - if there ever was such a thing

I guess VC-1 was Microsoft's codec, so when HD DVD lost the "war" also VC-1 slowly disappeared. And since Blu-ray has more space (25-50gb), MPEG-4 AVC probably works better.

AVC seems to be more effective at lower bitrates.. all the good VC-1 encodes i've seen had high average bitrates. A lot of Warner Bros's early attempts have VC-1 with low bitrates and they look terrible. Comparing my AVC-encoded Watchmen theatrical BD vs the VC-1 Ultimate Cut, the theatrical looks a lot better, with much more grain and organic detail, while the UC isn't nearly as sharp in the fine detail. Even bearing in mind that the the UC has an extra hour of material to deal with, 215 minutes isn't stretching disc capacity that much. Whereas I have AVC-encoded discs with up to 4 hours of content that look consistently excellent. I'd be interested to find a comparison between the file sizes from both discs actually...

VC-1 is actually quite ancient. I believe it was created back in 2003.
MPEG-4 is definitely the most efficient codec when it comes to compressing HD material.

Probably, but the codec alone isn't enough if the companies e.g. mess up encoding. Film-scanning technology is also improved.

- What is the source material? Original film AKA camera negative, or perhaps internegative (film duplicate)? Or some other?
- How is the film material scanned?
- How is the scanned material cleaned (etc)? They have to clean the material, but keep the "original" look intact.
- How about color correction?
- After the film is "remastered" (in 2K, 4K), how is it encoded to the Blu-ray disc?

Point is that codec is just one thing in the whole process.

Can't agree more. Infact, many people misunderstand codec affecting quality.
For ex. MPEG-2 doesnt make the transfer worse. Those transfers which were MPEG-2 encoded look worse then VC-1/AVC for other reasons.

I guess the main trouble with most mpeg-2 transfers is that they were often just recycled DVD masters, and/or were authored when Blu Ray was in its infancy. A lot of Sony's old mpeg-2 encodes do look good though, particularly Crank and Underworld Evolution.

Back on Expendables 3, looks like Australia also got stiffed out of the Dolby Atmos audio track on this one. It also only seems to include the extended cut. It's on my "get when it's very very cheap" list so if no one else provides stats for it i'll do so somewhere down the line.
