What kind of content plays during this?

It plays every interview from the disc with the same characters as one title. So "Muriel & Catherine", for example, simply plays all of the the sections with the two bats one after the other.

Trying to understand this.
So you play the episodes with "Play by Character", then you have the option to branch off to selected interviews, i assume by pressing enter when an icon appears? These interviews are taken from various featurettes found in the extras?

Each option in "Play by Character" is simply a video clip made up of sections from the episodes.
The episodes themselves are made up of interviews with animated talking animal characters, and each "Play by Character" video consists of every scene with a particular character played one after the other.
It's a branching feature in the sense that none of the clips have been re-encoded or duplicated on the disc; the player is actually buffering each clip from the episodes themselves, but treating each "Play by Character" sequence as one single video in the same way that some movies have multiple cuts on the same disc. It's not interactive.

The entries underneath "Play by Character" are the clip compilations; the characters are different on each disc, and you only get clips that are also present on the current disc's main episodes. "Bonus Material", "Behind the Scenes", and "Play by Character" are separate menus.
In fairness, I suppose the detail that they're branched isn't really relevant. To a normal viewer, they just appear as standalone videos that happen to be made up of clips from the episodes.
