The description says: "Includes The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, and The Godfather Part III as they were originally released on video, plus Francis Ford Coppola's final director's cut with 9 minutes of additional footage of The Godfather part III."

Is that really so? Does this collection have two versions of Godfather III, theatrical and final director's cut (though there is another final final cut releasing soon)?

No, just the "Final directors cut" (lol) on that DVD, which is the same version that was released on VHS. The original theatrical cut has never been released on any home format to my knowledge.

Godfather I original aspect ratio: Godfather III Coda

Postby NewDeep » 07 Feb 2021 04:25

Thx.
A question abt Godfather I (first film).
Was it originally released in theatres in academy ratio (4:3)?
The DVDs BDs are all 1.78:1 or 1.85:1.

Was the Godfather I VHS in uncropped 4:3?

The Godfather I was released theatrically at widescreen ratio 1.85:1. If you are a purist of how it was shown theatrically, then that's the ratio to go with.

The movie was originally shot by cinematographer Gordon Willis in 35mm full frame (~1.37:1), but planned for theatrical ratio of around 1.85:1, and thus composed accordingly. However, each scene was shot so they work for a more open matting, and projectionists have some leeway.
Thus, when it comes to DVDs/BDs, they have opened up the frame to accommodate the aspect ratio native to anamorphic widescreen DVDs and widescreen televisions.

Not exactly, it seems to be more a mix to me, when I look at comparisons. Some shots are opened up at the top/bottom, while others are cropped on the sides, and then others have both.

Godfather I original aspect ratio: Godfather III Coda

Postby NewDeep » 08 Feb 2021 06:33

Thank you.
Very informative!
I recently purchased the Coda BD released in India alongwith a collectors edition bluray 4disc Indian set of the original trilogy.
The 4th disc has additional scenes (not in film) which are presented in 4:3 ratio for first two films.

If you could post the specs of the Indian releases, we'll gladly add them to the database.
