THIS IS JINSY Series 2 takes you back to the extraordinary island of knitwear, folk song and hi-tech surveillance for a series of eight colourful new adventures. Join Arbiter Maven, his assistant, Sporall, repair woman Soosan and legal advisor Trince as they attempt to control Jinsy’s troublesome residents.

From an invasion of ancient hair to a dangerous encounter with a tribe of wild accountants, from the mysterious scheming of arch-enemy The Speckled Pom-Pom to a quest for The Golden Woggle… the island is once again peopled with a host of British television’s most popular stars as you’ve never seen them before: Stephen Fry, Olivia Colman, Ben Miller, Sir Derek Jacobi, Rob Brydon, Dame Eileen Atkins, Greg Davies, Stephen Mangan, Jennifer Saunders, KT Tunstall, Phil Davis and Katy Brand.

Episodes 1-4 are found on disc one, whilst episodes 5-8 are found on disc two.

Video

Originally made for BBC Three, "This Is Jinsy" eventually found its home on Sky Atlantic, which has built up a reasonable selection of fresh British comedy shows over the last couple of years. Delta Leisure release the DVD of "This Is Jinsy: Series 2" in the original broadcast ratio of 1.78:1, and the image has been anamorphically enhanced.

Not only is the show surreal in content, but the look of the show is also visually stimulating. From dark greys through to the bright colours of the often vivid imagery, the show looks as good as expected for such a new show. Blacks are deep, with no signs of any crush or blockiness, and brighter colours show good clarity with skin tones natural looking throughout. The transfer isn't without weaknesses though. I did notice some aliasing in some of the clothing, and some light banding at times. Also, there is some haloing effects, though this seems to be caused by the use of green screen during production more than anything so I have not counted it against the overall score. Detail is strong throughout, especially in facial close-ups, and there are no signs of damage. There is the odd artefacting effect, such as in the opening credits, but this has been done on purpose to fit with the style of the scenes in question.

The discs are region free, and the episodes are uncut.

Audio

Delta Leisure provide a single English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track for this release. Overall, it is precisely what you would expect for a current television comedy. Separation is reasonable, with good dialogue direction, and the folky and often whimsical score exerts great clarity throughout. Volume levels are consistent, with no moments where the score overpowers the dialogue, and there are no noticeable signs of damage such as drop outs or scratches. I didn't hear any background hiss either. There are plenty of scenes which would have benefited from a more engrossing 5.1 track, but what we have is more than acceptable for a television show.

Unfortunately, no subtitles have been included.

Extras

There are a couple of musical numbers which are extremely short (but hilarious) called "Uncertainty" (0:26) and "Where Were You" (0:11). From the looks of it, they appear to be deleted scenes, but it isn't made clear.

Other than that, we get a stills gallery (3:53).

Overall

There is a fine line between surreal brilliance and complete stupidity, and 75% of This Is Jinsy falls into the brilliance category. The random little songs had me laughing my backside off consistently.
