The Film

For reviews on the movie from various critics, we recommend visiting HERE.*** From acclaimed director Abbas Kiarostami (Taste of Cherry, The Wind Will Carry Us) comes the story of a couple's apparent chance meeting in beautiful Tuscany. He (William Shimell) is a British author in town to talk about his new book. She (Juliette Binoche) is a French gallery owner in search of originality. Together they tour the local galleries, cafés and museums and discover that nothing is quite what it seems and truth, like art, is always open to interpretation. Captivating and hugely entertaining, this acclaimed romantic tale playfully and provocatively blurs the lines between reality and imagination.

Independent British studio Artificial Eye have released "Certified Copy" onto Blu-ray in the United Kingdom, using the original aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The transfer is 1080p, and uses an AVC MPEG-4 encode. Using a Red ONE camera, it's just a whisker away from being reference quality material. "Certified Copy", from renowned Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami, is quite heavily de-saturated, and although I'm not always a fan of this look, it suits the mood of the film well. Colours are muted, yet natural looking, with lots of greys and whites dominating the palette, whilst blacks remain deep. Detail is exceptional at all times, with every grain in wooden furniture standing out, and every bit of stubble on William Shimell's face is noticeable. Shadow detail is also strong, showing no obvious drop in sharpness or clarity. There is no edge enhancement present, but I did spot one small bit of very minor aliasing on top of a gallery display cabinet. There is no damage to the digital print, apart from a couple of small instances of digital noise. This transfer is overall, of an excellent and consistent quality. The disc is region free, and the film runs 106:27.
Audio
There is a single DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track available on this release, and it is in a mix of French, English, and Italian. The track makes itself known almost immediately, with the microphone feedback from the opening scenes sounding lifelike and clear, rather than tinny. The film is very much dialogue driven, meaning it can be front heavy at times, but the surrounds are used to surprisingly good effect. General chatter, footsteps, vehicles, echoes of corridors, birds chirping... it's all here, with perfect directionality. The audio is crisp, and damage free. I noticed no background hiss, drop outs, or scratches. Optional English subtitles are available, but for non-English dialogue ONLY!
Extras
The main extra included on the disc is "The Making of Certified Copy" documentary, lasting 52:02. The documentary is in 720p, and is quite a standard making of. We are treated to a wide selection of b-roll, and behind the scenes footage, interspersed with cast and crew interviews. If you're interested in seeing on-location footage of the cast and crew at work, then it is worth a watch. The interviews contained within are interesting, and the participants easy to listen to. The only other extra, is a theatrical trailer (1:59).
