The Film

"The Giant King" is a fun family oriented animated film. It’s a simple yet effective movie. It's a prime example of a wholesome, innocent film that parents don’t really have to worry about their kids watching. It’s geared towards the whole family. An animated comedy with a touching emotional side, mixed with great childlike humor.

Originally titled as "Yak: The Giant King" which came out in 2012. The plot is very simple. There was a huge battle in the past. It is now a thousand years after that huge battle. The two main characters are Zork (Russell Peters) and Pinky (Bella Thorne). Both Robots, and both sworn enemies in the past. One day they wake up chained together. Both of them have no memory of what has happened or who they are. Both need answers and decide to seek out RAM who is the creator of all robots. So begins their journey across the desolate wasteland. Along the way they find new friends, and interesting characters.

One of the greatest characters in the film is a giant robot bird named Flapper, voiced wonderfully by actor Gregg Sulkin. Flapper is the true winner of the film. Actress Meg DeAngelis plays the character of Rusty, a cute little childlike robot that comes to life in a memorable way. All the characters are wonderful and each one adds a sense of silliness, and emotional appeal.

This is a film about the bond of friendship, good and bad, overcoming the past, building a better future, following your dreams, and not giving into the pressure around you. Believing in yourself and striving for a bigger, brighter way in life. This is equal parts comedy, with equal parts meaningful. Kids will absolutely love this. This was originally a foreign film from Thailand, but the English version was written by Nathan Ciarlegio and Doug Davidson. Directed by Prapas Cholsaranont, which this is his first feature length animated film, his first film period. This has the Dove Family Approved Seal, meaning it’s geared for all ages.

Video

Presented in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen. The picture is vibrant featuring beautiful tones. It's an amazing animated feature with dynamic colors. The video is crisp and solid in this department as far as standard definition DVD goes.

Audio

A single English Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track is included. The audio is perfect. Loved the voices, clear dialogue and sound effects. Crisp, excellent in displaying a vast array of talented perfection through the voice over work, considering this was a foreign film with Thai dialogue, the dubbing into English dialogue works greatly, and you would never guess that this originally was in another language. Optional subtitles are included in English and Spanish.

Extras

A single featurette, a series of cartoon skits, a theatrical trailer, bonus trailers and a digital copy are the supplements on this disc.

"Bringing the Characters to Life: At the Recording Studio" featurette runs for 10 minutes and 4 seconds. This is a program showcasing how the actors created their characters. It showcases actors talking about their characters and the voiceover process. This was a nice little program to get to know the people behind the characters.

- "United We Stand" which runs for 5 minutes 25 seconds.
- "Cruel World" which runs for 5 minutes 47 seconds.
