The Film
 Do you truly know the ones you love? When Will (CLAES BANG, DRACULA) discovers his wife (OLGA KURYLENKO, THE COURIER) and three children have suddenly disappeared, his perfect world begins to unravel. Setting out on a frantic search to recover his family and finding them in a remote village in northern France, relief soon turns to horror as he discovers his infant son has mysteriously died. What happened to his family? Is the cost of truth a price worth paying?

Excellent performances from a fine cast of well-known faces, measured direction and straightforward handling Are the strengths of this decent thriller-drama about a woman with a history of mental illness and trauma in the past coming back to dog her and her family in the present. The image is shot in the now ubiquitous 2.4:1 aspect ratio which seems an odd choice for something as non-epic and intimate like this, but it all looks fab. The colour palette is naturalistic with occasional moments of richness and flatter and more prosaic at others. Flesh tones are muted, black levels deep and rich with decent shadow detail and no signs of unintended crush. Contrast is lowkey and supportive. This isn't a visual powerhouse but it's a good-looking piece well rendered with no compression or tinkering. MPEG-2 / PAL / 2.4:1 / 89:47
Audio
English Dolby Digital 5.1 English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo Skip the 2.0 Stereo track as it's purely in the front unless you channel it through ProLogic II where it gets the job done. The 5.1 opens things up considerably and has a great deal more range and depth. This isn't a film where the soundfield kicks out so don't expect it; it's a suspense melodrama after all. It's more about ambiance and score than action effects although there are some of those, Annoyingly there are no subtitles for the hearing impaired.

Overall
The fairly prestigious thriller-drama The Bay of Silence comes to DVD from Signature Entertainment in the UK. The film is professionally shot if not inspired and looks great here considering it's only in standard definition; sound is decent and geta the job done focussing more on atmosphere and ambiance. The disc is cheap, the film enjoyable so recommended.
