OVERALL: Draw
*R2 German Koch Media release includes the 18fps speed restored version and the Kodascope 1929 version along with the trailer and outtakes plus the 1960 "The Lost World" film on a Blu-ray disc.
*2-disc R1 Fox SE uses the "George Eastman House" restoration (though in the liner notes it is falsely credited to "David Shepard") with the trailer and outtakesluded plus the 1960 "The Lost World" film on a separate DVD.
For more info about this release, please read the review Here (John Sinnott/DVDTalk).
*R1 (Image), R2 UK (Eureka), and R4 (Force) use the "David Shepard" restoration. They have an audio commentary, outtakes, and photo galleries. Note, that the R1 has a 5.1 music track though lacks the "Conan Doyle and The Lost World" featurette.
For more info about this version, please read the review Here (Mark Bourne/DVD Journal).
*The R0 SlingShot version has some exclusive supplemental materials and uses the Kodascope version of the domestic negative.
For more info about the various DVD releases, please read the comparison Here (Carl Bennett/Silent Era).
Information on differences can also be found in our "The Lost World" reference thread and at Digitally Obsessed.
Since this is a 1925 silent film, there are several film sources and restorations. Some are in 24fps, some in 20fps, and some in 18fps, transfered in NTSC or in PAL, with a variety of music scores. -
CUTS:
- R0 America- Alpha Video - Shorter, 69 minute version.
- R0 Special Collector's Edition America- SlingShot Entertainment/Lumivision - Shorter, 64 minute version.
- R1 America- Image Entertainment - (92:44 NTSC) 20fps transfer. Several scenes are now expanded in length or appear on home video for the first time (about a 90% restoration of the original film ). Some scenes have not survived, and those scenes are ignored here. Of particular note is footage that is missing from this edition, exists in the Lumivision edition: The shot of the dinosaur’s tail sweeping to the side and knocking several Londoner men off their feet.
-
R1 Cinema Classics Collection America- Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment - 24fps transfer, original 35mm film restored by "George Eastman House". Notes from Glenn Erickson / DVD Savant:
"This presentation is from the George Eastman house, with an original music score by Philip Carli. It's a very different cut than the 1997 Lumivision DVD (also an Eastman restoration) and also different than David Shepard's 2001 Image disc of this feature. All three appear to have unique scenes. Comparing running times doesn't tell us much because the longer versions frequently slow down scenes."
More info here by John Sinnott/DVDTalk. (76:01 NTSC) - R1 Drama Classics Triple Feature America- Navarre Corporation - Shorter, 69 minute version.
- R2 Special 2 Disc Edition Germany- Koch Media - No cuts - Includes the restored original version in 18fps (96:44 PAL) and the Kodascope version from 1929 (65:17 PAL).
- R2 King Kong (1933) Special Edition Italy- Sony Pictures Home Entertainment - No cuts
- R2 United Kingdom- Eureka - (92:42 PAL) 20fps transfer.
- R4 Australia- Force Video - (92:42 PAL) 20 fps transfer.
