OVERALL: Draw
All releases apparently contain the 'R'-rated cut of the film; the UK release has had the previous BBFC cuts waived. The French release has a bonus interview with Nicole Brenez, but it's in French with no subtitles.
Versions:
The 'R'-rated version suffers from edits in two specific scenes:
(a) in the scene in which a naked Kelly McGillis is terrorised by Tomas Milian's character, the moment in which a gun is trailed over McGillis' body is abbreviated; and
(b) the scene in which a character is killed in a bathroom was trimmed.
The unrated version was once available on VHS in America. In the UK, the unrated version was released on VHS by Entertainment in Video in 1989, but the cassette suffered from 17s of BBFC-imposed cuts.
The film was taken away from Ferrara during post-production and the editing was completed by the inhouse editors at Vestron. Ferrara's preferred cut is the workprint, which runs for 157 mins and has never been released on home video; Ferrara is said to own a 35mm film print of this version of the film, which he sometimes allows to be shown at festivals. -
