OVERALL: R0
The US release from Raro seems the best option at the moment, containing the longer international version of the film which has been struck from a new HD master, and presenting the film in its OAR of 1.66:1. It also contains English subtitles for the Italian dialogue track.
Alternatively, both the Australian or the Italian DVDs, for containing the most intact versions of the film. (Please note that the Italian disc does not appear to have subtitles for the Italian audio track.)
Versions:
The film was released in a number of different versions. The film was a coproduction between Britain, Italy and West Germany, and the German-language and English-language versions have substantially different running times, with both versions containing exclusive footage that isn't present in the other version.
The R0 Australian and R2 Italian DVD release appear to contain the same print, which seems to be representative of the Italian domestic cut (which contains the exclusive footage from both the German and English export versions).
The English language version was released on VHS in the UK (91:31 PAL).
A pre-VRA VHS release was available in Britain that contained an even shorter version of the film, reducing much of the film's sexual content (82:19 PAL).
Please see this thread at LovelockandLoad for more direct comparison of the different versions, with screengrabs.
GENERAL NOTES:
The film was released in the United States simply as "Dorian Gray" but the onscreen title card was always "The Secret of Dorian Gray". -
CUTS:
- R0 America- Raro Video USA - No cuts - International version which restores a pre-credit sequence not included in the original American and British theatrical releases which started with the title sequence (101:00 NTSC)
- R0 Australia- Big Sky Video - No cuts - International version which restores a pre-credit sequence not included in the original American and British theatrical releases which started with the title sequence (97:04 PAL)
-
R2 Germany- Arthaus - Yes - TV master with the following cuts:
- Nightclub scene omits footage of Dorian and his entourage getting the husband drunk (1:40)
- A scene of Dorian sitting with his cat is curtailed (1:20)
- A conversation between Sybil and two men about the identity of Sir Galahad is cut (0:40)
- Some shots of Dorian walking around London are missing (0:20)
- The climax is edited differently and there are no end credits nor the title card with the quote from Oscar Wilde (90:48 PAL) - R2 Italy- Raro Video - No cuts - International version which restores a pre-credit sequence not included in the original American and British theatrical releases which started with the title sequence (97:03 PAL)
