original Italian version:
- The best choice is the R0 US Limited Edition by Blue Underground since it is in the original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, has many different soundtracks, both in English and Italian, and plenty of extras.
English Director's cut:
- The Troma edition is nearer to the original aspect ratio and has extra material but isn't anamorphic and it's a PAL-NTSC transfer.
- The Italian edition is anamorphic but cropped from 1.66:1 to 1.78:1 and has some extras.
GENERAL NOTES:
The film exists in two primary versions:
- the original Italian version (~119min);
- the English export version (~118min) which omits 1:14 worth of material. The missing material takes the form of two isolated scenes, one involving Anna talking on the phone to the husband of one of the murdered women, and the other featuring Anna meeting her dead lover’s mother at the airport.
*Info regarding the aspect ratio from Blue Underground from Facebook at the time of their 3-disc limited edition release:
A few people have expressed concern over the aspect ratio of our upcoming release of THE STENDHAL SYNDROME, so the Italian lab that did the new scan have provided us with some frame grabs for comparison. It’s important to note that the new 2K scan was done from the Original Camera Negative (OCN), while previous transfers were done from an Interpositive (IP). When examining the OCN, the lab found that several shots were hard-matted to 1.85:1. They performed tests on several scenes, cropping the image to both 1.85:1 and 1.66:1. The 1.85:1 framing added significant picture information on both the left and right sides, while losing only a sliver of picture on the top and/or bottom (and the shots hard-matted to 1.85:1 lost nothing). -
