Two versions of this film are known:
1) International Version (~95:41)
2) R-Rated U.S. Version (~95:41)
- No noticeable runtime difference in the actual film (minor differences due to various distributor logos and such excluded) but the R-Rated Version features less bloody alternative footage in two scenes: The nose breaking and the throat stomping. The latter has also got its sound effects toned down.
Scene breakdown (MINOR SPOILER!!):
1) In the scene where Tom (Viggo Mortensen) breaks the nose of one of antagonists, in the R-Rated Version the antagonist twitches on the ground as blood dribbles slightly down his face. In the International Version blood spurts also out of his nose and onto the grass.
2) Towards the end when Tom crushes the throat of one of Richie's thugs, in the R-Rated Version the sound of the stomping has a wetter, squishing sound. A small amount of blood also wells up in the thug's mouth. In the International Version however, the sound of the neck being stomped has a louder, sharper and more distinct cracking sound and the thug spits blood up out his mouth and onto his own face.
Detailed image comparison of the differences can be found at Movie-Censorship.com. The comparison is of DVDs but the same changes apply to Blu-rays as well. -
