The Lionsgate Blu-rays feature a 4K restoration of the director's cut and includes the introduction that accompanied some screenings as an extra; however it does not include the theatrical cut or scenes from it as an extra.
For the theatrical cut, the HD Cinema Classics release has a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 upmix while the Film Detective has a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio track and SDH subtitles.
A fan would want both cuts of the film.
GENERAL NOTES:
The film exists in four versions:
- Francis Ford Coppola's unseen director's cut (~69 minutes at 24fps);
- the theatrical cut (~75 minutes at 24fps) featuring two additional scenes directed by Jack Hill featuring a poacher: the first in which he startles Kane and is chastised by Billy, and the second in which he is decapitated by the killer;
- the theatrical cut with the "Test" introduction by Dr. William Joseph Bryan who is credited as "technical advisor" on the end credits of all versions (~82 minutes);
- the director's cut as it screened in 2018 with the Bryan introduction (~75 minutes). -
CUTS:
- Blu-ray A Director's Cut America- Lionsgate Home Entertainment - No cuts - Director's cut without the additional scenes directed by Jack Hill (68:43)
