OVERALL: Draw
Film Masters US/Canada for the new transfer and extras.
GENERAL NOTES:
Roger Corman shot the bulk of the film in four days, but the second-unit work was filmed over a nine month period by five directors, Francis Ford Coppola, Dennis Jakob, Monte Hellman, Jack Nicholson, and Jack Hill.
When this film was originally shown in cinemas the film was projected at a ratio of 1.85:1, all the versions of the film that appear on DVD (except for the Virgil Films release) are unmatted 4:3 transfers and therefore show more image at the top and bottom of the screen. A more recent master created for screenings on the TCM was matted to 1.85:1.
In 1990, actor Dick Miller, who plays Karloff's major domo, was hired to shoot new scenes to use as a framing sequence for an overseas version of The Terror. Under this scheme, the main action of the film is presented in flashback. This was done for Corman to establish some sort of copyright in the movie (outside of his contract work at American International, few of Corman's independent movies from the early sixties were registered for copyright originally). -
