OVERALL: Draw
The UK version runs ~2 mins shorter than US version but this is not a censorship issue, indeed it is arguably the "racier" version, and features the original audio/vocals over the opening titles.
(The UK release has a colourized version of the film as well, if you like that sort of thing.)
IMDB give the OAR as 1.85:1 - a 1.66:1 matte is more likely. The UK release is then an open matte, based on the framing of the opening credits. -
CUTS:
- R0 America- Image Entertainment - No cuts - US version (84:05 NTSC).
-
R0 United Kingdom- Renown Pictures Ltd - No cuts - UK version (78:52 PAL).
The differences between the UK and US versions are as follows (thanks to Rewind user Tim_Rogerson for supplying them).
Opening credits:
Song in US version ('The Night Caller') with credits for this Instrumental piece, in UK version ('Images') with credits for that.
US version also has an additional producer credit (US credits last 20s longer than UK version, probably on account of the different music tracks).
~15 mins:
UK version missing footage of a secretary opening door, speaking to Pat Haines, then closing door (25s)
Death of John Carson:
UK version missing end of shot of his dying (9s)
~50 mins:
UK version missing end of scene between Supt and Sgt in which Supt walks to and looks at board showing pictures of missing girls (20s)
Soho bookseller scene:
In the UK version the women on the magazine covers are mostly topless.
US version has alternate takes with different covers in which women are more conservatively dressed.
~72 mins:
UK version missing dialogue from Ballard Berkely to John Saxon at end of scene about combat units in south of England standing by (10s)
~72 mins:
Next scene (between Supt and Sgt) cuts off early in UK print before Supt leaves room. US print shows him leave and Sgt gets on phone and asks for 20 men for a raid (6s)
~73 mins:
UK version missing dialogue from end of next scene (John Saxon to Ballard Berkely) about putting a transmitter on Ganymede (15s)
~76-77 mins:
Scene of girl in bed ends early in UK print. In US version she puts her head back on the pillow and sighs semi-orgasmically (22s) - R2 Italy- Sinister Film - No cuts - US version.
