OVERALL: R2
Currently the only release we have specs for.
This was originally cut prior to the cinema release by the BBFC to gain a 'U' certificate. Studios would start at the script stage submitting to the BBFC and at every stage of production the film would be monitored leading up to the final agreed edit which would be released to UK cinemas.
When preparing the final edit the BBFC asked for the following:
- Reduce to a minimum the pelting of the blind man with stones.
- Remove the shot of a man being slashed in the neck, and the sounds of his screams.
The DVDs have been taken from the same Studio Canal owned master. User Mark Meakin tells us the first cut is hard to tell and he was unable to spot the neck slash. This leads us to believe it is still the UK theatrical edit and not a prerelease version.
This was standard practice with British films so doesn't count as being cut in any way shape or form. The BBFC would always be given scripts and then later reels to pass judgement on before final edits were assembled. Occasionally, as in the case of The Curse of the Werewolf, whole earlier edits are found to exist and only then are the UK theatrical edits considered cut. -
