OVERALL: Draw
The Hong Kong IVL version is uncut, has the original mono and a remixed DTS soundtrack and features a selection of extras.
Do note US Dragon Dynasty has the best selection of extras but the movie is the shortened Miramax cut.
Note the 5.1/7.1 tracks remixed by Fortune Star for the DVD/Blu-ray releases added new and sometimes erroneous sound effects not present in the original stereo track. A noticeable mistake is when Chan's character hanging from a helicopter ladder is heading towards a steam train which instead makes the sound of a Diesel locomotive horn blowing three times: the signal for reversing. The original Cantonese mono track has the original steam train horn intact.
The following is missing from the Miramax version (NTSC runtimes) (thanks to rewind users Hiro UK/estebon_spielbergo for confirming these cuts):
- The original opening logos, credits, and a scene where DEA agents brief the Royal Hong Kong Police about the rise of notorious drug trafficker Chaibat (2:36).
- Right After Jackie apparently accepts the mission, a brief scene where Uncle Bill reveals his worries about the dangers involved. Philip Chan tells Bill to be more positive (0:26).
- Following that brief exchange, Philip Chan hands Jackie a small piece of paper containing an emergency phone number, which turns out to be Uncle Bill's number. The scene ends with Bill spitting on the piece of paper and sticking it onto the door of Philip's office as they leave (0:35).
- Right after Jackie is assigned his new identity, a scene where Michelle Yeoh is teaching Jackie some mainland slang, which he flubs (0:36).
- After fighting with the military combat coach, Jackie winds up in a tree. Missing is a comedic bit where he falls from the tree (0:07).
- After Jackie busts Panther (Yuen Wah) out of the labor camp, the two can be seen treading through pouring rain to meet up with Panther's buddies. Missing is a brief scene where Jackie reacts to the foul smell of local swine (0:20).
- Right before the night market fight, a short scene where dogs and cats are seen in cages and one puppy is shown being held up by the back of its neck is cut (0:31).
- At Caibat's penthouse, Pierre, a henchmen, is seen injecting a bikini-clad woman with heroin (0:46).
- Pierre then informs Chaibat that the woman has died. It is also in this scene that one of the henchmen is revealed to be a traitor. The man is drowned in a subsequent scene, which is present in the US version (1:09).
- After looking on helplessly as the man is drowned, Jackie witnesses the dead woman being carried away (0:08).
- After May discovers Jackie at the same hotel resort, she goes ballistic. Later, Jackie approaches her in the lobby to explain that he is undercover. Missing is the following scene where Pierre makes a joke about women before asking Jackie about his truckdriving skills (0:24).
Also note that orginal credits have been replaced by English credits and that closing credits are also longer.
Information on differences can also be found at Movie-Censorship. -
