Probably the rarest DVD release in the world, the rights to this title were revoked soon after it went on sale making this release OOP.
There are 3 known versions of Criterion out there:
1) The genuine Criterion release. 29 chapters. Optional subtitles, a booklet with liner notes, AND in the disc itself: a "white ring" in the center of the disc. (Thanks to Rewind user Gavin_Salkind for this information.)
2) Bootleg #1. 29 chapters. Optional subtitles, no booklet, and there is NO "white ring" in the centre of the disc, and the artwork is slightly different than genuine Criterion DVDs and the "Facets version". This is an Asian-sourced bootleg, with a low-GSM, glossy paper insert.
3) Bootleg #2. 9 chapters. Burned-in subtitles and booklet with notes of 9 chapters (on a white background which is bordered by images of a scene from the film). No white ring and the disc artwork is slightly different (the image on the disc only has the naked youths on it and a raised Criterion Collection logo on the disc on top of the image). This is the so-called ""Facets version".
Cases of all these versions appear to be identical from the outside. Also the film transfers seems to be identical.
The "best bet" is to check the disc: Make sure it has a white ring in the center.
Thanks to Robert Sharp for these specs and Jari for help with cut status and bootleg research. -
