OVERALL: Draw
All releases have exclusive extras. Do note that the 2023 UK and US releases come from a 4K restoration and includes the English subtitles for the Italian track as well as "The Pit" scene inserted back in from a film source. The 2023 Severin edition also includes the U.S. version of the film from a new 4K restoration.
Coming soon from:
- Severin Films (UHD and 4K-mastered Blu-ray)
GENERAL NOTES:
The film exists in a number of cuts based on local censorship; however, the three principle versions are:
- the Italian version (~84 minutes at 24fps/~81 minutes at 25fps);
- the English export version (~88 minutes at 24fps/~85 minute at 25fps) including a five minute scene in which Lori falls into a pit and Peter fights off a pair of cannibals who find her (this scene has been reinserted into some transfers of the Italian version and remains in English since it was never dubbed into Italian);
- the U.S. "Doctor Butcher M.D." version (~82 minutes at 24fps/~79 minutes at 25fps) which trims several expository sequences, replaces the Italian score with an electronic one by Walter Sear, a shortened credits sequence, and adds zombie footage from the unfinished New York anthology film "Tales That Will Tear Your Heart Out" to the opening. -
CUTS:
- Blu-ray ALL America- Media Blasters - No cuts - Italian version (84:05)
- Blu-ray ALL America- Severin Films - No cuts - Includes the original Italian "Zombie Holocaust" version, but extended with "The Pit" scene restored from film elements rather than included as a video-source deleted scene (88:57) - which accounts for why it runs slightly longer than the export version with the same scene - and the US "Doctor Butcher, M. D." Version (81:46)
- Blu-ray ALL 4-Disc Collector's Edition America- Severin Films - No cuts - export version (89:13) with "The Pit" scene restored from film and the US "Doctor Butcher, M.D." version (81:50)
- Blu-ray ALL Limited Edition Austria- XT Video - No cuts - includes the Italian version (84:04), a "long version" (85:44 PAL) with "The Pit" scene added, and the German cinema version (74:03 PAL).
