OVERALL: Draw
Between R0 Tai Seng DTS -release and R2 UK (HKL) -release. Both are uncut and anamorphic, but UK DVD has superior extras while the Tai Seng DVD has DTS and an exclusive commentary track. The choice is yours.
VERSIONS:
Two different soundtracks exist for the film, with different music cues. The English dub on the HKL disc and the mono (Cantonese) track on the first Mei Ah DVD both contain the film's most widely-heard soundtrack. This is also present on the DTS Tai Seng release.
The Cantonese track on the Columbia DVD and the Cantonese track on the HKL DVD present the film with a slightly different soundtrack, missing some music cues and adding some new songs. There is speculation that this may be a workprint soundtrack.
Detailed information on the differences between the two soundtracks can be found at the Asian DVD Guide
GENERAL NOTES:
AVOID THE R1 COLUMBIA US RELEASE, sources indicate that the soundtrack has been tampered with, certain musical cues have been reduced in impact, further there seems to be a glitch in the audio transfer on Chapter 20 at approx 61:38 (during the sex scene) the Cantonese track switches to the English dub for three lines!! (Thanks to Evil Disco Guy for pointing these out). -
CUTS:
- R0 America- Tai Seng - Yes - Seems to be cut for violence, and is missing some dialogue that is included in the R1 (though this maybe an international release, that contains extra dialogue on the dubbed version) (Thank you for the Terry-UK for this info) (98:30 NTSC).
- R0 Special Edition America- Tai Seng - No cuts (98:26 NTSC).
- R0 Hong Kong- Mei Ah - Yes - Seems to be cut for violence, and is missing some dialogue that is included in the R1 (though this maybe an international release, that contains extra dialogue on the dubbed version) (Thank you for the Terry-UK for this info) (98:30 NTSC).
- R0 DTS Hong Kong- Mei Ah - No cuts.
- R1 America- Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment - No cuts - The Cantonese soundtrack is lacking some of the ambient music from the original version, and there is a "sound switch" in chapter 20 (98:52 NTSC).
- R2 Japan- Geneon - Yes - Sight of genitalia has been digitally blurred (98:30 NTSC).
- R2 United Kingdom- Hong Kong Legends - No cuts (94:44 PAL).
