OVERALL: Draw
Since no complete season sets have been released (the series ran in nine seasons for 264 episodes), it's best to get the 17-disc "Dean's Ultimate Collection" box set. "The Best of Dean and His Friends" disc also includes additional episodes.
Do note that many of these episodes are cut from their original broadcasts (except in the "Uncut" set). There are also other noticeable cuts in the programs, but that's how the episodes were originally aired (shows themselves were often trimmed for TV).
For the very detailed reviews, episode lists and cuts, please see the links (The Golddiggers Super Site) HERE (The Best of), HERE (King of Cool), HERE (Uncut), HERE (Christmas Show) and HERE (Dean and His Friends ).
Other releases: Earlier 29-volume "The Best of The Dean Martin Variety Show" DVD anthology from Guthy-Renker. -
CUTS:
- R1 King of Cool: The Best of The DM Variety Show CE America- Time Life - Yes, episodes are incomplete. Some musical performances are missing (probably due to the cost of the music licensing). Please see the review on the main page for more info.
- R1 The Best of Dean and His Friends - Walmart America- Time Life/StarVista Entertainment - Yes, episodes are incomplete. Some musical performances are missing (probably due to the cost of the music licensing). Please see the review on the main page for more info.
- R1 The Best of The Dean Martin Variety Show CE America- Time Life - Yes, episodes are incomplete. Some musical performances are missing (probably due to the cost of the music licensing). Please see the review on the main page for more info.
- R1 The Dean Martin Christmas Show America- Time Life - One Dean Martin's couch number, "I’ll Be Home For Christmas" is missing. The DVD also includes the "rebroadcast" version of the episode: Because Christmas Eve fell on a Thursday in 1970, the 1968 Christmas show was rerun that night, two years after its initial telecast (with several new cameos by celebrities announcing Christmas gifts for children inserted at the end of the program).
- R1 The Dean Martin Variety Show Uncut America- Time Life - Includes six (nearly) uncut episodes. One musical number, "Love's Gonna Live Here" by Buck Owens, is missing due the print damage.
