US Severin limited edition for having the most complete version of the film over the Code Red and 88 Films releases and bonus disc over the standard edition, though the other editions feature different extras so real fans may want to pick up all of them.
For a cuts comparison between the Code Red US Blu-ray and the Dutch VHS, please visit Movie Censorship.
A comparison between the Code Red and 88 Films releases can be seen at DVD Exotica.
General Notes:
There are many different cuts of this film. Most versions are missing most of the bloody moments, but there are also longer dialogue sequences in some cut versions than in other uncut prints.
Onscreen title is Nightmare.
Includes more footage than the Code Red release, but is still missing some footage in comparison to the Dutch VHS.
More info from Blu-ray.com forums (user Wernski):
- 88 Films' disc has more footage than the Code Red version, but it's not 100% of the scene as described on Movie-Censorship.com.
- In the Code Red version, the babysitter comes down the stairs, sits on the floor, then turns around suspiciously and proceeds to go outside. In the 88 version, the babysitter comes down the stairs, sits on the floor, starts to read a magazine, and then we see her being watched from outside the house again (as they show on Movie-Censorship), with the killer stepping on some leaves, which then prompts her to turn around suspiciously and go outside, syncing back up with Code Red. BUT Movie-Censorship also shows that "the kids get downstairs and start whining in front of Kathy but she sends them back to bed." That bit is not in 88 or Code Red's version. So 88 essentially restores about 35-50% of those 4 missing seconds.
- All of the additional bar shots Movie-Censorship shows seem to be on 88's release, so I believe that's 100% restored. All four of the shots that M-C shows have been put back in... which gives us a slow discovery of the killer in the bar crowd, as opposed to just showing us he's right there, and of course more of that sweet country tune. Code Red cuts from the exterior parking lot shot to several shots later into the bar scene.
- In the house, everything is the same on both discs until you see the shadow of the killer coming up behind the kid and the close up of the dead girl. On Code Red's disc, the kid says "oh my god," and then it cuts back to the girl's body and then a close up of her face as we hear the kid get strangled. On 88's, after the shadow and then close up, we have the kid say "oh my god," but instead of cutting back to the body right away, the shot continues as the killer actually, slowly walks into frame behind the kid, walking towards him, and just as his hand touches his neck, it cuts back to the girl's body and then the close up of her face as we hear the kid get strangled. It does look like maybe M-C's tape has a couple extra frames at the end of that shot, because their still has the killer with his hands actually on the kid's neck, while on 88's he just gets to the point where his fingertips reach the neck. So I guess you could say that's maybe 90% restored. Code Red doesn't even have the killer walking into frame behind the kid at all.
- The shot at 1:03:01 is longer on 88's version, showing the kid walking along the side of the house with the sea behind him up to the front door, whereas Code Red starts that shot later, so you don't see the sea behind him and the kid's already closer to the door. M-C doesn't mention this scene at all, but it's different between the two Blu-ray releases. -
