OVERALL: Draw
The Japanese Special Edition has both versions of the film with 5.1 and mono options with the most extras.
The US release has an exclusive commentary but only includes the theatrical version.
The German Intergroove has a differing exclusive commentary but uses a 1080i50 transfer and has lossy audio.
This exists in two versions:
1. The original 1974 version made at USC smuggled out of the University and given a theatrical release. This is John Carpenter's and Dan O'Bannon's preferred version (71 minutes).
2. The longer 1975 theatrical version (assembled by producer Jack H. Harris) with the addition of new scenes (including the meteor storm, the visit to the crew's quarters, and Doolittle playing his music) (83 minutes). -
