GENERAL NOTES:
The film is available in a few versions:
- the French/Italian version (note that there is a French VHS release in which the nightmare sequence cuts directly to the operating room scene as Georgia recognizes Carmilla - the topless shots have been removed - and what remains of this sequence has Georgia's close-ups in full color while the skin of Millarca and Carmilla, as well as the costumes and the set walls are all painted red for the color effects opticals seen in the finished version of the sequence);
- the German version (the DVD of which might be missing footage or it was censored upon theatrical release);
- the English-language version created by Paramount that deletes the doctor's story on board the plane as a framing device and instead presents it as a recollection of Millarca's spirit through narration, removes some early expository scenes - the first scene featuring the main characters is the evening drawing room sequence - as well as a frontal shot of Carmilla tearing her dress when she sees it bleeding only in her reflection. This version also adds some electronic music and more narration throughout - adding to the obsessive nature of Carmilla's character - a shot of a dying rose in the greenhouse scene, and a shot to the ending confirming that Millarca has possessed Georgia. We do not know if Paramount's theatrical release included the full nightmare sequence but the shots missing from the German DVD but the version that appeared on U.S. VHS from Paramount does indeed include the shots of Carmilla's bleeding dress and the close shot of her topless on the operating table. -
