OVERALL: Draw
US Extended Version:
The R2 Japanese release for the original Japanese language track and widescreen transfer.
The US Retromedia Special Edition has a commentary track, but the film only has the English dub and uses a cropped transfer. It should also be noted that while the Japanese Version is still under copyright, the AIP Version is in the public domain and therefore its available in budget releases which are best to be avoided.
Director's Version:
Shout! Factory has not only Japanese audio (with optional English subtitles) but also includes the AIP English dub (although it reverts to Japanese in selected scenes not dubbed) and a bonus film.
General Notes:
The flashback sequence in the film (where the Virasians examine Gamera's memories which utilizes footage from the 3 previous Gamera movies) varies in 3 forms; the Original Japanese Version which is just a short montage, the Director's Version which heavily lengthens the scene to include Gamera's battles with Barugon and Gyaos, and the US American International Pictures TV Version which extends Gamera's battle with Gyaos.
Information on differences can be found at Movie-Censorship. -
