OVERALL: Draw
Arrow is the most comprehensive in terms of versions and extras (the limited version has a second disc with two additional versions while the standard has two versions and all of the other extras on the first disc); however, the French disc has some exclusive extras and the German Subkultur disc has an exclusive commentary and a German cinema version (however, it is the poorest in video quality because it does not utilize branching). The German Pidax disc is a port of the Subkultur disc that drops the commentary track.
GENERAL NOTES:
The film exists in a number of versions:
- the Italian version (~96 mins)
- the French version (~90 mins) shorter than the US theatrical version, but including several exclusive scenes, such as the "Bridge" scene (1:20) and a longer "Hallucination" scene (7:16).
- the German version (~93 mins)
- the international version (~94 mins)
- the British version (~85 mins)
- the American version (~93 mins) in which many scenes have been removed, including the "Bridge" scene (1:20), which was never dubbed in English, and offers a shorter (6:29) version of the "Hallucination" scene.
- the extended American verison (~96 mins) restoring all removed scenes, except for the "Bridge" scene (1:20) and offering the longer version of the "Hallucination" scene (7:16).
The English tracks place some music differently from the other cuts, and the American version adds a misogynistic opening narration: "Trouble began with a women. Here in the country village of Veeze outside Amsterdam, Holland, you're about to meet a young man, a writer, who would deny that obvious truth. For he is naive; he respects, he loves women. He is about to change his mind."
NOTES ON THE ARROW VIDEO EDITION AND VERSIONS:
- The Italian version and the English export version include the nipple shot that was originally only included in the French version.
-The English export version also includes an insert shot of Raab's sketch with Italain text and an insert shot of the letter Elfie writes to Hans that is in Italian even though an English-language insert was shot for the English version (a second English subtitle track is enabled for these shots if this version is played without the SDH subtitle track selected).
- The French version includes French text on Raab's sketch of Annelore as well as a French-language insert of Elfie's letter to Hans (both of which are translated in the English subtitles).
- As with the Italian and English export versions, the US version includes Italian text on Raab's sketch of Elfie (this was also the case with the UK version), but it includes the English-language insert of Elfie's letter to Hans that is not included in the export version transfer. English translation of the sketch is only available if English SDH subtitles are enabled. -
