The Quatermass serials were broadcast live and the technology to record live TV was still in its infancy in 1955 when "Quatermass II" was broadcast.
It basically involved pointing a film camera at a TV screen to create a Telecine recording. In the case of QII, an insect alights on the monitor from which QII is being recorded from and appears faintly throughout one episode. -
