OVERALL: Draw
Between the R1 American and R2 French edition for the best extras. Note that only the American edition is English-friendly, and only the French edition has 5.1-channel audio track.
Note that the R0 Scandinavian and R2 UK have a different audio commentary and one interview (found on the French release) not found on R1, so you might need both releases.
Also note that the R4 Australian edition has a commentary and a documentary of its own, as well as 5.1-channel audio.
The R2 German SE has a documentary on the film’s composer Nino Rota, but this edition isn’t English-friendly.
GENERAL NOTES:
The film was shot in Super Technirama 70 format in which 35mm film was run through a camera sideways (like VistaVision) with an eight-perf width made wider with anamorphic lenses. The 2.55:1 image was then blown up to 70mm and cropped to 2.20:1 while the 35mm Cinemascope-compatible prints were cropped to 2.35:1. The 2013 Italian and 2018 German Blu-rays feature a newer scan of the film exposing the entire width of the frame. -
CUTS:
- R0 Scandinavia- Atlantic Film - No cuts – Italian version (177:51 PAL).
