OVERALL: Draw
Austria are uncut while the cut US has extras.
GENERAL NOTES:
The transfer making the rounds on the PD DVD circuit is an Avco Embassy TV print (from the Unicorn VHS) with the “Bell from Hell” (no article) title card. It features the scenes missing from the French master on the Pathfinder DVD but is trimmed elsewhere (92 minutes versus the 97 minutes of the Austrian DVD converted to 24fps).
NOTE:
The 2:14 missing from the US DVD is as follows (timings are taken from the Spanish bootleg DVD):
At approx 47:48 on the Spanish disc (47:55 on the US), a scene in the parlour with John dancing with Esther cuts from a shot of Aunt Marta (Looking left of frame, her left side) to another shot of Aunt Marta during the dinner room sequence. Eating soup. There is a little audio pop here.
What's missing are three scenes and part of the dinner scene. After the dancing scene, missing are:
1. Scene of John and Esther running outside and looking at the bee hives (47:47-48:09).
2. Backyard scene with John and Esther talking and Maria on the swing (48:10-48:57):
Esther: "So you and Maria were lovers, weren't you? I mean, real lovers? Hmm?"
John: "Yes."
Esther: "And one night you tried to rape Teresa?"
John: "hmm (unintelligible)"
Esther: "So, I am the only one left. Is that normal ... or are you really ...?
John: "What do you think?"
This then cuts to Aunt Marta and Thersa walking through the house (48:57-49:59).
Marta: "And this is my sister's. And this was sold, and um ... let's go. Close the door. After the verdict, we'll sell the house. It's the entrance to the cellar; there used to be a simple lock on that door."
Teresa: "We shouldn't have come here."
Marta: "Why not?"
Teresa: "I don't know."
Matta: "You mustn't show him that you're afraid of him. Besides, what more could he do to you, Teresa?"
The US DVD resumes at the 50:00 on the Spanish DVD; on the Spanish DVD we see the full shot of Marta eating soup, and the camera pans down to the turtle on the table. The first second of that shot is missing on the US disc and we pick the shot up mid pan down to turtle. -
