OVERALL: Draw
R1 MPI, and R2 Optimum -releases are restored by MPI (this time not UCLA), and those are the ones to get.
If you want all the extras from these films, you can buy all the 14 films (12 from "Universal Pictures" & 2 from "Twentieth Century Fox") on the box set (R1/R2). R1-releases have English subtitles, which might come in handy with the older films like these. R1-release is also available separately, with few extras.
So: Choice is yours.
Note, that there are several budget releases also, e.g. by "Blackhorse Entertainment" (UK - Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Collection), "Orbit Media Ltd" (UK), "Bfs Entertainment & Multimedia" (US), "Delta Entertainment" (US), "Focus Film Entertainment" (US), "Force Video" (Australia) etc etc, but basically avoid them all.
GENERAL NOTES: This is the first of US-made series of Sherlock Holmes films, made by "Twentieth Century Fox" (after this and "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939)", films were produced by "Universal Pictures"). -
CUTS:
- R1 America- MPI Home Video - No cuts, Holmes's drug use is intact.
- R2 The Definitive Edition United Kingdom- Optimum Releasing - No cuts, Holmes's drug use is intact.
