OVERALL: R2
Anchor Bay is an NTSC-to-PAL conversion but is anamorphic and has an audio commentary.
GENERAL NOTES:
An American/British co-production, the film exists in three principal versions:
- the international cut (98 minutes at 24fps) as seen on most DVDs;
- the U.S. theatrical cut (91 minutes at 24fps) from Quartet Films and released on VHS by RCA/Columbia, deleting shots and short scenes for pacing with the major deletions being the clock striking seven at 14:00 during the library scene which the housekeeper interprets as a portent of death which explains Annabelle's later reaction to the clock only striking six times distracting her from the disappearance of the lawyer (roughly 1:30) and an extended portion at 41:00 of Hendricks' meeting with the guests in which he diagnoses psychopathology in each of them (roughly 5:30);
- an expanded version (102 minutes at 24fps) which reinstates previously deleted material, most notably some short comic bits (involving Paul, Cecily, Susan, and a snippet from the filmed will of Cyrus West) as well as an expansion of a scene between Paul and Annabelle talking about their childhood crushes on each other.
The film has also been released on DVD by Screenbound Pictures. Although their submission to the BBFC lists the 102 minute running time of the expanded version, listings for the DVD and Screenbound's streaming version on Amazon Prime cite a 94 minute running time (suggesting a PAL transfer of the international version). -
