OVERALL: Draw
Between R2 France from ESC Editions, R2 Germany Wicked-Vision and R2 Germany E-M-S : they all have an anamorphic transfer, both English and Italian soundtracks and offer each different extras.
Note that among these, only the E-M-S offers English subtitles on the movie, and that some extras on the French and Wicked-Vision releases are not English friendly.
If you require English subtitles on the movie, the Kino could also be a good choice since it has an audio commentary by Tim Lucas, not found on the E-M-S edition.
Finally, also note :
- the identical US VCI/Australian Beyond (non-anamorphic),
- the French Mad Movies (no English soundtrack),
offer minor exclusive extras.
The film is also known as:
- "Son of Satan"
- "The Way and the Body" -
CUTS:
- R0 America- VCI - Yes, the master is missing two short shots - one of Kurt riding up the beach, and a later shot of Nevenka frightened by a whipping vine - as well as Kurt riding into the castle courtyard and remarking "The dog recognizes the master" to the servant's reaction to his appeareance (86:54 NTSC). The two short shots are featured as Easter Eggs but the latter shot is not.
- R0 Australia- Beyond Home Entertainment - No cuts (86:54 NTSC).
- R1 America- Kino Lorber - No cuts (87:11 NTSC).
- R2 France- ESC Editions - No cuts (83:20 PAL).
- R2 France- Mad Movies/Fravidis - No cuts.
- R2 Limited Collector's Edition France- ESC Editions - No cuts (83:20 PAL).
