OVERALL: Draw
There are only minor language and subtitle differences between the releases (apart from differences in the main titles sequences of the first four episodes: see the note below).
However, please note that whereas the R1 release presents the series on double-sided 'flipper' discs (which some DVD players seem to struggle to play), the R2/R4 sets present the episodes on single-sided discs. Please also note the French release is split into two volumes.
Note about the main titles sequence:
The show's original title was 'The Night Stalker', and on the series' original run the first four episodes carried that title. However, with episode five the series was renamed 'Kolchak: The Night Stalker', and the title sequence was adjusted to reflect the title change. In repeats, the new title sequence was retroactively added on to the first four episodes, replacing the original 'The Night Stalker' titles sequence.
The titles sequences of the first four episodes of the R1 set announce the show as 'Kolchak: The Night Stalker' (i.e. they use the titles sequence added to the episodes for their repeats on US television), whereas in the R2/4 sets the first four episodes carry the original title 'The Night Stalker', as per their original broadcasts.
General notes:
-"The Night Stalker (1972)" is a TV-movie.
-"The Night Strangler (1973)" is a TV-pilot movie for the series.
-"Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1974-1975)" is a TV-series. -
