OVERALL: Draw
The UK Masters of Cinema 2013 re-release for the longer restored version of the film with the original German Intertitles, 2 commentary tracks and the most extras.
The Australian Director's Suite release has an exclusive commentary track and many extras with both German and English intertitles.
Note that other editions have differing commentaries and featurettes, different variations of music scores, and taken from differing versions of the film.
There are multiple versions of the film available:
- Public domain version - poor quality copy of MoMA's incomplete B&W print. It's sometimes edited and/or sped-up, running anywhere between 60-84 minutes. Unless noted as being from a restored source, all DVDs use this version.
- 1987 Enno Patalas restoration
- 1991 David Shepard version - based on MoMA's print
- 1995 Enno Patalas restoration
- 2000 David Shepard version - edit of the 1987 restoration
- 2006 Luciano Berriatúa restoration.
Detailed information between the differing versions, differing scores, and history on the film can be found at "Nosferatu: The Ultimate Blu-ray and DVD Guide" at Brenton Film.
The 2006 restoration is also available in:
- France by MK2 (2-disc /1-disc editions)
- Spain by Divisa
The differences between the Public Domain print and the 2006 Restoration can be found at Movie-Censorship. Note that the 2006 restoration has one shot that is upside down, and has not been corrected on any of the DVD or Blu-ray editions.
Notes on copyright status:
"Nosferatu" has always been copyrighted everywhere except for the US. There, its copyright lapsed for several decades but was restored when the US belatedly fell into line with the rest of the world, effective from 1 January 1996. As DVD came along a couple of years later (and BD 10 years later), that means every unauthorised disc is a deliberate bootleg and should be avoided. These DVDs are from labels such as Alpha Video (US), Catcom Home Video (US), Dark Vision (UK), Delta Entertainment (US), Diamond Entertainment (US), Digital Disc Plaza Entertainment (US), Elstree Hill (UK), Front Row Entertainment (US), KVP (France), Madacy Entertainment (US), Miracle Pictures (US), MVD (US), Navarre Corporation (US), Slingshot Entertainment (US) and others.
Note there are multiple pirated versions which are unlicensed transfers of non-public domain versions:
The French DVD from Films sans Frontières, Italian DVDs from Ermitage Cinema and Studio 4K are bootlegs. -
