OVERALL: Draw
US Version:
R1 SE has additional Screen Tests, 2 Easter egg featurettes, and an optional commentary on the first Deleted scene.
R2 UK SE, R2 Japan and R4 Australia SE contain a DTS track. Note the R2 UK SE also has a fairly substantial booklet.
Internation Version:
Only minor differences between R2 releases.
Versions:
- US theatrical version (124 minutes)
This version includes at the beginning a more shocking memento of WWI, when it shows crippled baggage handlers in the train station where Monty meets Harold. After that we can see the loading of their baggage in a taxi they share.
- International theatrical version (123 minutes)
The beginning is shorter and different, introducing Harold Abrahams while playing cricket with his colleagues. The scene in the train station, is absent: we simply see Monty writing a letter to his parents, mentioning that "Harold is as intense as ever".
In the commentary, Hugh Hudson relates how the cricket scene was always intended as an introduction for the film's characters - but at the insistence of the American distributors was cut. Apparently the distributors felt that American audiences would be confused by the game of cricket. -
