Today:

Stiletto (German Blu) - Not bad, but the plot and acting were relatively weak. Decent cast but poorly utilised. I should note though, it was the heavily edited German Blu-ray I viewed, not realising it was cut by over 11 minutes. I'll try and check out an uncut version eventually and update the score as required. Horrible Blu with poor PQ and screwed up audio (see review for details) 4/10

Tremors 4 (UK Blu) - So I made it to the fourth film, and again, found myself having a surprising amount of fun all things considering. The film might be pap, but it's damn enjoyable pap that fits well with the rest of the series, even as a prequel. Now, when will we get a Tremors 5? 6/10

Frankenhooker (UK Blu) - Old school effects, completely original take on a Frankenstein tale, and the ending is an absolute corker. They don't make them like this anymore, that's for sure. 7/10

An Idiot Abroad (UK Blu) - Episodes 4-5. Two more left which won't be viewed until next week as I'm watching it with someone else who is away through the week.

You guys should try DVD Profiler. Lots of functionality, offline and online programs, more info, cast and crew linking etc etc. I think it's about $30 now for a lifetime subscription, but well worth it IMO. Looks good - only 1 problem for me: it's a program I have to download and install. My goal is to have it residing online (in the cloud), so regardless of on which device I make any additions/changes, it's immediately accessible anywhere without requiring any syncing.

THE WHIP AND THE BODY (first viewing, US dvd) - 8/10

Watched it for the first time. I'm not a Bava fan but this, and Black Sabbath, are two of his best films I've watched. The Whip and the Body has all the elements of a mystery thriller with a gothic backdrop. The cinematography, music and production design are superb. Even though Chris Lee only plays for around 30 minutes, his presence - as always - is worth watching. A solid Bava mystery thriller.

The downside of the Kino dvd I watched is that the original elements from which the film has been remastered are in poor condition: washed out colors throughout the whole film. Not to mention the contrast of some of the scenes, which are too dark for audience to be able to see what's happening


ARGOMAN - THE FANTASTIC SUPERMAN (first viewing, US dvd) - 6.5/10

I knew about this film when I saw the lobby cards at a local cinema. As a child, I was hooked by Argoman's costumes even though he looked quite fat for a superhero . Never watched it then until I came across this rare Dorado dvd release last year. 70% spy and 30% superhero film, Argoman is more appropriate to be watched as a spoof of superhero comics of the era.

Hoping for new remastered dvd release of other similar B-movie super heroes: The Three Fantastic Supermen (1967), Supersonic Man (1979) and The Puma Man (1980).

Today's viewings:

Planes (NowTV) - Pixar's worst to date IMO. Average through and through. Good animation can't make a film stand out, especially not these days. 5/10

Cobra (UK Blu) - Far from Sly's best, yet still an enjoyable little film with some hilariously hammy dialogue. 6/10

Midsomer Murders: The Killings of Copenhagen (UK DVD) - 100th episode, and it's a good one with a Nordic twist. Good to see them reach out a little more for the occasion, considering 100 feature length episodes over 16 series is a great accomplishment. 8/10

And some short films also:

Toy Story of Terror (Youtube) - Not the best of the various Toy Story shorts, but still amusing enough to be above average. 7/10

Hawaiian Vacation (Youtube) - Solid short from Pixar based around the Toy Story universe, in particular Ken and Barbie who miss out on going to Hawaii with Bonnie, so end up having Hawaii recreated by the rest of the toys. As usual, Mr Potato Head brings the funny. 8/10

Found (BBC iPlayer) - Short film written by Naveed from Still Game and at time of writing available on BBC iPlayer. Quite refreshing, but never quite sets itself apart from similar shorts. Certainly worth a peek whilst it's there though. 6/10

Not a Pixar film, it wasn't developed nor produced by Pixar, it was Disney all the way. In fact it was originally intended as a straight to DVD release, but Disney decided to give it a theatrical run.

Far from Sly's best indeed but still a shame the nearly twice as long workprint version has never been released officially, even as a bonus feature like some other similar 80s action films have got in recent years. I know the workprint is out there as a bootleg but I can't be bothered with those.

Cobra looked good, not great.

Assassins looks very good for catalogue title (A-) - Review up very shortly, just formatting it.

Will watch the rest over the next few days, but from what I heard, the rest look better than your average back catalogue releases. For the price, it's been great so far.

If we're talking horror, Kino (read: German), superheroes, spy (read: detective), who else has seen KILLER CONDOM? Quite unforgettable, even after all these years since I watched it (90's I think it was)...

Haven't watched it, but poster reminded me of flying "Cars". From what's written here, guess it's not something to rush and watch.

For some reason I find his earlier stuff more entertaining/better: Night Hawk, Rocky 1-4, First Blood (all that come to mind for now). His latest stuff (Expendables #, Rambo 4, etc) sounded promising but the execution left me mostly cold.

My viewings:
THE SKIN I LIVE IN [LA PIEL QUE HABITO]: 6.25/10 Anaya a very good performance, and the others (Marisa, Antonio, Blanca) put is solid work also. Good direction by Pedro Almodovar maintains the mystery (sustained from the begining) throughout, from an ok script with Agustin Almodovar, based on a novel. Mostly frontal 5.1 audio except the music. Barebones DVD unfortunately, so hope I stumble upon a similarly extras-rich blu like the non-AU versions.

RECLAIM YOUR BRAIN [FREE RAINER] 6.75/10 Moritz also a good performance. Well directed by Hans Weingartner, from an ok (though a little simplistic) script with Katharina Held (also somewhat "fairy-tale-ish"). But quite a decent watch.

Today:

Assassins (UK Blu) - A little slow at times, and wasn't keen on Julianne Moore in this one, but Stallone and Banderas have good chemistry that keeps it ticking. 6/10

Tango and Cash (UK Blu) - Sly and Kurt Russell in what is an enjoyable little romp with some funny dialogue and entertaining action scenes. Far from the best both have been in, but this was a great team-up. Still time to make a second guys!

Boardwalk Empire: Season 2 - Episodes 1-3

Short:

PostHuman (youtube) - Stylishly violent animated short with a nice idea. Well animated and well paced, but could've been an extra minute long to add a little backstory. 7/10
