Horror-Thriller Double Feature
Dolls (First viewing - YouTube) - 6.5/10
The best thing about this movie is the cool stop motion animation sequence of the doll scenes. I was thinking of getting the BD, but there are better choices. Worth a watch, though.
The Mutilator (YouTube) - 6/10
Watched it years ago on video. This slash-and-stalk thriller offers nothing new, except for the sadistic death scenes which should satisfy gorehounds. It makes you scratch your head to see how the opening and ending credits play out - a perky teen pop song in a slasher film just doesn't blend to set the viewer's mood

Speed 2: Cruise Control (First viewing on US BD) – 6.5/10
I saw it at the cinema with high expectations but was sorely let down. Having watched this again for the second time after 17 years, I feel some things are wrong with it – at least to me :
- Jason Patric does not have screen presence and charisma, unlike Keanu Reeves, which makes his role as the leading star a bore. Besides, Patric and Bullock don’t show natural chemistry as a couple.
-The film leaves the audience viewing “in the dark”, literally speaking, during the plodding evacuation scene and the “hero-suspects-something-is-wrong-and-investigates” scenes. We can hardly follow what’s happening on screen for at least 30 minutes, I guess.
- As with most sequels to a box office film, the film fared poorly in crucial aspects. The title itself should have been a totally different one. Not a sequel but another high-octane action film with other promising actors as the lead casts.
- Since the lead actor doesn't have screen presence, the action sequences - however excitingly staged - become predictably routine, and viewers feel uninvolved.
As a side note, the PQ of the US BD is somewhat unsatisfying: the flesh tone looks reddish as if the characters had just had a sunbath. Then during the prolonged lights-go-out scenes, we can hardly see what’s going on - it's too dark.
I got the dual pack for Speed, Speed 2 is just a bonus to me

The Package [1989] (First viewing on US BD) - 7/10
This Cold War political thriller grabbed my attention when it was playing at the cinemas. I got the chance to watch it on video too. The Day of the Jackal comes to mind when I think of The Package, both of which share some things in common. However, the tension in The Package never becomes as nail-biting as Zinneman's masterpiece. Director Andrew Davis tells the rather complicated story in a deliberate pace with pieces of the plot shown right from the first few minutes. If you can't put the scattered pieces together when the ending credits roll, chances are that you won't enjoy the film.

Baron Blood (UK Blu)
Quite all right, but really not among Bava's best - 6/10.
Jeune et Jolie (French Blu)
Interesting movie about a young girl that becomes a prostitute "by choice" - 7/10.
Touch of Sin (TV)
Good description of a corrupt Chinese society, but this could have been greater - 7/10.
The Machine (TV)
Kind of mix between Universal Soldier and Ghost in the Shell… really not convinced - 5/10.
The Bride of Frankenstein (UK Blu)
Another classic, follow-up of a classic! 8/10
Insidious 2 (German Blu)
Good surprise overall, quite frightening, as was the first part - 7/10
Deux Hommes dans Manhattan (US Blu)
Really far from Melville's best, but an interesting picture of NY by night - 6/10.

Wheels of Terror (First viewing on Spanish BD-R) – 7/10
Watched it years ago, this anti-war film was an odd release when it played in the cinemas in 1987. I didn’t remember any other WWII movie being released during that year. David Carradine and Oliver Reed get top billing but actually play supporting cast. The Germans are played by American actors (Bruce Davison and David Patrick Kelly – The Warriors “Come out and playeeeeaay…” to name a few) so everyone has an American accent. You don’t expect realistic portrayal of WWII while watching this, just enjoy it for what it is. The other title “The Misfit Brigade” should have been the only title, “Wheels of Terror” doesn’t fit the plot at all.

I remember this being one of few Burt Reynolds’s films that I like. It’s an action thriller that has elements of sitcom and romance. The 80’s romantic jazzy pop score, by the great Jerry Goldsmith, lends a feel-good nuance to the film which may confuse viewers as to what genre the film intended to be – action thriller or romantic comedy. A late-night time-passer that is worth watching if you like Burt Reynolds and Liza Minelli.

Not bad, but not as good as the Raimi movie IMO - 6/10.

Classic werewolf movie! 8/10
Les Aventures d'Adèle Blanc-Sec (German Blu)
Really not convinced by the actress and not that much by the story. A bit funny at times, but well… Besson is the shadow of what he once was - 5/10.
As Tears Go By (HK Blu)
Interesting debut of WKW - 7/10.
Don Jon (TV)
Story of a man more interested by sex on Internet, than with a partner… pretty funny after all - 6/10.
Eight Below (TV)
I was doubtful, but finally decided to watch this Disney movie. Well, I must admit this story of survival was really well crafted - 7/10.
Pitch Black (US Blu)
Among the best "'survival" SF movies (except for the Alien saga of course)… a classic - 8/10.
Phantom of the Opera (UK Blu)
Not as much convinced as I've been by the older movies offered on this "Monsters" boxset - 6/10.
L'Inconnu du Lac (TV)
A thriller in the gay community, with everything happening around a lake. Pretty disturbing at first because it's very explicit. After you get on top of it, it was nothing special… 6/10.
En Solitaire (TV)
French movie about the famous "Vendée Globe" sailing race… good performance by François Cluzet, but unfortunately the writers felt compelled to introduce many external elements, when this couold have been a telling of loneliness and survival. Too bad. 6/10.

Toy Soldiers (First viewing on UK DVD) – 7/10
I’ve never got around to watching the whole of it but I knew this was my kind of film. Basically, a Die Hard plot that is given a new setting and a different kind of protagonist – this time it’s a bunch of high school teenagers who becomes accidental heroes to save the day. The middle part is rather slow, but the last 20 minutes makes up for it.
Thor the Conqueror (First viewing; US DVD) – 5.5/10
Apart from the attractive poster on the sleevecover (I miss this kind of hand-drawn film posters
), I bought the DVD because I got the feeling that it would be that kind of Z-grade Italian film of the 80’s. I’ve seen the actor Conrad Nichols aka Bruno Minniti play in an Italian post-apocalyptic film, which I happened to like, and I remember the director Anthony Richmond aka Tonino Ricci for being notorious for his bad filmmaking
This low-rent Conan clone tells about a quasi-civilized lone warrior Thor (No, not that Mighty Thor, son of Odin) who is seeking revenge against his parents’ brutal murderer – a barbaric tribe leader named Gnut. Raised and protected by a mystical mentor - the Owlman (the man can transform himself into an owl and vice versa), Thor is led to venture on a quest for honing his fighting skills and physical prowess before eventually confronting the evil Gnut and his henchmen.
Those familiar with Italian sword-and sorcery films of the 80’s may think that this character Thor is a family member of the main character in another similar Italian film Ator the Fighting Eagle released a year earlier, which spawned 3 sequels. Nope. It’s just their names that rhyme: Thor and Ator

The Three Musketeers (2011) - 6/10 , entertaining nonsense. Some good performances and visuals, cheesy predictable storyline. Exactly as expected.
