Sword and sorcery double feature:
Sorceress (1982) [First viewing; YouTube] - 5.5/10
Twin sisters Mira and Mara must battle against their own father, an evil wizard who wants them as sacrifice to his god. When one of them is kidnapped, the other - with the aid of a viking and a faun - launches an all-out attack on their father's temple to rescue her sister.

For lovers of cheesy 80's sword and sorcery adventure films, this may be your cup of tea.

The Seven Magnificent Gladiators (YouTube) - 5/10
Seven fearless warriors led by a mighty barbarian are assembled to vanquish a demi-god and his henchmen who is terrorizing a village of old people, women and children.

I saw this sword and sandal take on the Seven Samurai at the cinema in 1983! Besides seeing big Lou and sexy Sybil, the only interesting feature of the film is the rousing original score. The rest is forgettable. Not on DVD.

Lou Ferrigno, Brad Harris and Sybil Danning star.

Yeti: Giant of the 20th Century (First viewing; YouTube) – 3/10
As a child, I used to be awed when seeing giant monsters on TV or at the cinema. I remembered passing by a local cinema and seeing the theatrical poster of Yeti but never got a chance to see it.

This awfully crappy 1977 Italian production assaults you not only on your sight but also your hearing. Be prepared to hear a funky disco song ‘The Yeti’ sung by the so-called The Yetians that is played about halfway through the film:

“The Yeti’s big!
The Yeti’s tall!
But he’s so good

He is so big!
The man of snow!
But he won’t harm you
The Yeti

He is so tall!
The man of snow!
But he won’t kill you
The Yeti”

Imagine singing the song with those lyrics

Not on DVD, but I don't mind adding it to my collection.

The House of Seven Corpses (YouTube; First viewing) – 3/10
A group of low budget filmmakers is filming a horror film in a haunted old house where grisly occult-related murders were committed. Unwary of the fateful curse that may befall them, the cast re-enact a devil-worshipping ritual that took place in the house as part of their film script, thus unintentionally resurrecting a lumbering blood-thirsty zombie from the house cemetery!

This is one of the worst horror films of the 70’s I have ever watched. The horror builds at a snail’s pace with nothing much interesting going on during the first hour except occasional false scares. What is even worse is that the payoff and ending, which should have at least made up for the dull 60 minutes, will still leave you scratching your heads.

John Ireland and John Carradine star.

The House Where Evil Dwells (First viewing; f.o.c) – 5/10
A young writer and his family moved to Japan and decided to stay in a remote old house in a beautiful countryside. The uninhabited place, which was introduced by a friend of the writer’s, holds a terrifying dark past that has haunted it for centuries. A local monk who knows the tragedy of the cursed house warns them of the dangers that may befall them if they decide to stay there.

Not long after their moving into the house, strange unworldly incidents begin to happen to them but go unheeded. Falling under the spell of the evil spirits, the writer and his family gradually spiral down the clutches of the dark souls that are preparing them to re-enact the horrific deeds committed in the house centuries ago.

As far as haunted house stories go, the plot is quite interesting. It is basically the same old plot set in a different culture. Unfortunately, the directing itself is flat and the pacing uneven. And there are several unexplained sub-plots which are based on traditional Japanese folklore. In a film based on a foreign folklore, viewers should be able to “get” what they are watching. Instead of piquing the viewers’ curiosity, the recurring theme of Japanese black magic, for example, is left for viewers to interpret. Then there are the poor visual effects that look funny.

An alternate title for the film would be “Ghosts Make Me Do It:roll:

As a horror film, The House Where Evil Dwells just doesn’t cut it. It fails in many aspects: directing, acting, narration, scare level and visual effects.

Edward Albert, Susan George and Doug McClure star. Kevin Connor directs.

1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Theater)
Pleasant to watch, but almost a copy/paste of the original story - 7/10.

2 - The Riot Club (Broadcast)
Not quite convinced by this movie in which rich students believe they can do anything - 5/10.

3 - Taken 3 (Broadcast)
Still efficient but soon forgotten... not much to say - 6/10.

4 - L'Enquête (Broadcast)
Investigation movie dealing with the "Clearstream" scandal. Good suspense and this allowed me to really understand what this story was really about - 7/10.

5 - The Wolverine (Extended cut) (UK Blu)
Set in Japan, this is clearly a notch above the first Wolverine movie, even if not as good as the best of the X-Men movies - 7/10.

6 - Sabotage (UK Blu)
Old Hitchcock movie : rather pleasant to watch, but really far from his best - 6/10.

7 - Badlands (US Blu)
I hadn't watched this for a very long time and this was quite a rediscovery. Two wonderful actors, tremendous directing and unforgettable score - 8/10.

8 - Jersey Boys (French Blu)
A "rather weak" Eastwood movie that made me discover the "four seasons" band - 6/10.

9 - L'Affaire SK1 (Broadcast)
This is my first great surprise this year : a dark, violent and nihilistic French movie telling the true story of a serial killer - 8/10.

10 - Blackhat (US Blu)
Some good moments, but not very memorable, especially for a Michael Mann movie - 6/10.

11 - Strike Back #5 (Broadcast)
Another good season for this worthwhile action series! 7/10

12 - Hell on Wheels #1 (French Blu)
I enjoyed this first season : great actors, good story and directing… let's see what's next - 7/10.

13 - Le Sel de la Terre (Broadcast)
Really tough to watch at times, but a fascinating vision of the world we live in - 8/10.
