Burt Reynolds Double Feature
Sharky’s Machine (First viewing; f.o.c.) – 6.5/10
Burt Reynolds is Tom Sharky, a narcotics cop who is re-assigned to the Vice department following a bungled drug bust. In Vice, Sharky teams up with an eclectic crew of cops who become his ‘machine’ to uncover a prostitution ring that involves a mob and a local politician. When one particular high class prostitute (Rachel Ward) whom they are zeroing in on is brutally shot in her apartment, Sharky and his machine lead off an investigation to break the case.

This is an action thriller with rather uneven pacing, especially during the surveillance scenes which drag the movie during the first hour, and an abrupt ending. The title itself, Sharky’s Machine, isn’t actually the focus of the whole movie, which centres on Sharky and his task to protect the prostitute whom he falls in love with. Sharky’s ‘machine’ is merely a supporting cast to the plot.

Charles Durning, Vittorio Gassman, Henry Silva, Brian Keith co-star. Burt Reynolds directs.

Heat (1986) (YouTube) – 6.5/10
A tough freelance bodyguard, and compulsive gambler, Nick Escalante (Reynolds) dreams of leaving his profession to settle in Venice, Italy. What he needs is a chance to collect a huge sum of payment from his service. His drifitng life gets a second wind when he is hired by a young gambling-addict businessman to Las Vegas. However, his adventure in Vegas turns into danger when he decides to help his friend, a prostitute, to take revenge on the mobsters who have brutally raped and beaten her up.

I saw this in a double feature midnight show at the cinema and felt bored. What’s worse, it was missing some 15-20 minutes of footage before the climax! Now that I’ve rewatched this, I appreciated it better. I also realized that the film has two endings: the one I saw at the cinema had a different ending from what I’ve just watched. I like the theatrical version as it makes more sense.

Not on BD.

Erik Estrada Double Feature
Hour of the Assassin (YouTube) – 7/10
Erik Estrada is Martin Fierro, a hired assassin who is on a mission to kill the President of a South American country. Secretly employed by a group of embittered generals who are threatened by the newly-elected president’s liberal political views, Fiero is tricked into believing he is fighting for the people. While a CIA agent is tracking him down across the country to stop him, Fiero - now a fiery dart - sets out to accomplish his mission at all cost.

Watched this decades ago on video. The plot resembles a lot like that of The Day of the Jackal, but with a twist ending. Pretty enjoyable as an 80’s action thriller.

Robert Vaughn (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) co-stars. Luis Llosa (Anaconda, The Specialist) directs.

Not on DVD/BD but Code Red/Scorpion Releasing might release it.

Light Blast a.k.a. Colpi di Luce (YouTube) – 6.5/10
Just revisited another movie from my video days. This 80’s action detective film tells about a vengeful physicist, and his band of mercenaries, who is terrorizing the city of San Fransisco with his gigantic lasergun that can melt an area the size of a tennis court. Demanding a hefty ransom, the scientist threatens to cause havoc in the city. Hot on the trail of the deranged scientist is Inspector Ronn Warren (Erik Estrada), a fearless, no-nonsense cop who has his own uncompromising ways of meting out justice to the criminals.

This is a pretty decent Italian production with some good car chase sequences and action stunts.

Ennio Girolami a.k.a. Thomas Moore (The New Barbarians) co-stars, Enzo G. Castellari (High Crime, The Big Racket, Escape from the Bronx) directs.

Not on BD.

80’s Hong Kong Legends Double Feature
Tiger Cage (f.o.c.) – 7/10
A rookie narcotics cop Terry (Donnie Yen) unexpectedly discovers that his senior colleague is involved in an international drug syndicate. In a cruel twist of fate, Terry is killed when he reports the case to his superior, Inspector Wong (Simon Yam - Full Contact, Wake of Death). Terry’s colleagues Shirley (Carol Cheng - Armour of God II: Operation Condor) and Yau (Jacky Cheung - Bullet in the Head, As Tears Go By) who are elite members of the narcotics squad, suspect a conspiracy that implicates a high-ranking officer in their department. When both are framed and targeted for murder, they must defend themselves and uncover the deadly truth.

This is a top notch example of 80’s HK cop thriller, full of frenetic foot chases, intense shootouts, and bone-breaking fist fights. Must watch if you like late 80’s HK action thrillers.

Corey Yuen directs.

As Tears Go By (f.o.c.) – 7.5/10
Wah , a young gangster, is living a dangerous life in the mean streets of Hong Kong, making ends meet by collecting debts at his Godfather’s bidding. He has Fly, his reckless younger brother, and sidekick who is a loose cannon that often plunges both of them into trouble. Fly’s never-do-well attitude is put to the test when he is assigned by his Godfather to wipe out an informant, which forces Wah to partake in the mission that might be their last.

Revisited this classic mid-80’s Hong Kong gangster drama as I remembered liking it the first time I watched it. Among the many shoot-em-up Triad action drama churned out during the mid-80’s, this being a character-driven gangster drama with little shoot-em-up scenes stands out as one of the few most riveting.

Andy Lau (God of Gamblers, Casino Raiders, Infernal Affairs), Jacky Cheung (Tiger Cage, Days of Being Wild), Maggie Cheung (Irma Vep, In the Mood for Love, Hero), and Alex Man (Tragic Hero, Young and Dangerous) star. Wong Kar-Wai (Days of Being Wild, Chungking Express) directs.

Louis Gosset Jr. Double Feature
Iron Eagle 2 (First viewing; f.o.c.) – 5/10
Colonel 'Chappy' Sinclair (Louis Gosset Jr.) leads a top-secret joint US-Soviet mission against a hostile middle-eastern country which is threatening world peace with their impending nuclear capability.

A boring sequel to a so-so original. Sidney J. Furie directs.

The Guardian [1984] (YouTube) – 7/10
A tenant of an upper middle-class Manhattan apartment is killed by two juvenile intruders. Fearing unexpected violent attacks, one of the tenants named Charles Hyatt (Martin Sheen) recommends his neighbors to hire a security guard. Enter John Mack (Louis Gosset Jr.), a former military man who promises to ensure safety in their apartment. Upon hire, the authoritative Mack enforces new rules and sets up a security system, quickly restoring the safety of the tenants. When Mack kills a young heroin-addicted burglar in the apartment, Hyatt becomes concerned about his presence and decides to get rid of him.

My second viewing after 32 years! Many made-for-TV films are forgettable, this is not one of them. A thriller with a plausible plot and thought-provoking open ending.

Not on BD.

Wolf Lake [1980] (First viewing; f.o.c.) – 5/10
Four middle-aged war veterans visit a lake in the Canadian rural woods for their annual duck hunting. Upon arriving, they are welcomed by a young couple and hired caretakers of the lakeside cabin. When one of the veterans, a patriot who has become unhinged after his son was killed in Vietnam, discovers that the male caretaker is a Vietnam War deserter, he unleashes his pent-up fury on him and his girlfriend… which sets off a bloody reprisal.

Plays like Straw Dogs (1971) but with a weak plot. As you are watching this, you will notice the contrived hooks of the conflicts – a scene that involves the antagonist knowing the male caretaker’s status of a deserter. Another scene is when the caretaker’s girlfriend unnecessarily taunted the antagonist, which triggered his plan to terrorize both of them later in the second act. Could have been a lot better.

Rod Steiger (The Amityville Horror, Lion of the Desert, Love and Bullets) stars. Burt Kennedy (Hannie Caulder) directs.

Kino Lorber is releasing this on BD in October.

Russian Roulette (First viewing; YouTube) – 6/10
Shaver (George Segal -The Quiller Memorandum, Rollercoaster), a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer on suspension is secretly assigned by the Special Branch to apprehend a potential assassin who is believed to be out to assassinate a Soviet premier on his state visit. Shaver’s task becomes complicated when his target man mysteriously disappears, which drags him into uncovering a covert assassination plot.

A 70’s Canadian action thriller without much action or thrill. Worth watching if you are into light-weight 70’s detective/conspiracy thrillers.

Cristina Raines (The Sentinel) and Denholm Elliott (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) co-star.

Man on Fire [1987] (First viewing; f.o.c.) – 6.5/10
Tony Scott’s Man on Fire (2004) is one of my favorite action thrillers. This original version has the same main plot but with minor subplot differences and a different ending. The setting is different too – whereas the remake takes place in Mexico, this takes place in Italy. What this original version lacks compared to the remake is the acting, directing and editing. Worth watching for curiosity sake.

Scott Glenn, Joe Pesci, Danny Aiello, Jonathan Pryce (Brazil, Evita, The Age of Innocence), Brooke Adams (Invasion of the Body Snatchers [1978], Cuba, The Dead Zone) star.

Kino Lorber is releasing it on BD in October.

Extreme Heat Double Feature
City on Fire! [1979] (First viewing; YouTube) – 6/10
A disgruntled employee sets fire to an oil refinery, causing it to explode. The uncontrollable fire rapidly spreads throughout the city, and eventually traps the people in a city hospital.

This is no Towering Inferno, and should have been retitled as “Hospital on Fire!”. A lot of rambling soap opera and not much tension.

Barry Newman (Vanishing Point, 1971) stars. Susan Clark (Airport ‘75), Leslie Nielsen, Shelley Winters, James Franciscus, Ava Gardner, Henry Fonda co-star. Alvin Rakoff (Death Ship) directs.

Firestorm [1998] (First viewing; f.o.c.) – 7/10
A group of Wyoming State Penitentiary convicts escapes after an arson sets a nearby forest ablaze. Their plan is to retrieve 37 million dollars that was hidden by their leader (William Forsythe) in the forest. Trapped in the fire is Jennifer, a bird-watcher who is also taken hostage. When veteran firefighter and smokejumper Jesse Graves (Howie Long) arrives at the scene, he must do everything he can to save Jennifer and fight back the convicts.

I missed this when it was playing at the cinema. Mark reminded me of this again when I saw his post, so I watched it

The plot resembles that of Cliffhanger. The lead actor could have been played by any action star of that era. Unfortunately, newcomer Howie Long is wooden and does not possess onscreen charisma. No wonder he disappeared after this. One film feature, besides the decent plot, which is worth seeing are the action scenes. If you like style-than-substance action adventure, this will satisfy you.

Suzy Amis, Scott Glenn co-star. Deam Semler (Mad Max 2, Dances with Wolves, Waterworld - cinematographer) directs.
