Bicycle Thieves (1948)

Post by Brent_Reid »

There's been lots of online discussion about the relative merits of the three different licensed BD transfers, especially on Blu-ray.com and CriterionForum.org. In case you're wondering, the consensus of best-worst is the Italian San Paulo (90:40), US Criterion (89:27) then UK Arrow (88.35). However, no-one's yet mentioned the huge disparity in runtimes. Does anyone know the reason why; is anything missing?

I only own the Italian BD and will post specs shortly...

Moving to discussion as no correction included

I guess the time could be down to anything from additional company logos (though the amount of time seems quite big for this) to dead screen at the end.
I work away a lot but I will reply to all PM's within a few days so please have patience!

Re: Criterion - aren’t Criterion and Janus logos part of the same video stream of the titles?

Italian might include logos and restoration credits (and possibly info anout the restoration)

I've submitted the Italian BD specs. The actual runtime, minus restoration credits, is 88:53. It uses the same new restoration as the Criterion, though the latter's transfer is much lighter and cropped. The Arrow BD (and the Oz Umbrella port) use an older, grain-scrubbed transfer. Can anyone confirm the actual film runtimes of any of these?
