Sanjuro (1962) UHD UPDATED

Post by Darrel_Griffin »

Sanjuro (1962) UHD
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=70586

Blu-ray ALL America - Criterion Collection
Two Samurai Films by Akira Kurosawa

I believe the media release year should be 2025, not 2024. It is a 2 movie box set, and on the page for the other movie (Yojimbo), the release year is 2025. Also Blu-ray.com states a release date of 7th January 2025.

1. On the Sanjuro UHD page:
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=70586

Blu-ray ALL America - Criterion Collection

still states media release year of 2024, when it should be 2025.

---
2. Also, I have noticed that for the Blu-ray pages for both movies in the set:
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=18972
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=18973

they state:

OVERALL: Draw
The US/Canadian and UK 2025 releases...

Yet the US/Canadian 2025 releases are not currently listed on these pages at all, only on the two UHD pages. I cannot be sure, but I expect the Criterion Blu-rays in the 2025 UHD + Blu-ray sets are sourced from the new 4K scans, and if so, will be different to the 2010 Blu-rays, even if the extras are the same. Regardless, it doesn't make much sense to reference the 2025 releases in the OVERALL section when they are not listed.

---
3. Plus both the Blu-ray pages need a minor correction in the OVERALL section:

"...a 4K restorations..." -> "...a 4K restoration..."

Removed the "a". The 2025 refers to the UK release, not the US/Canadian as their Blu-rays recycle the older Blu-rays. Updated.

Ok, a few things... I will number the points below as per my previous post:

1. On the Sanjuro UHD page:
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=70586

Blu-ray ALL America - Criterion Collection

It still states a media release year of 2024. This contradicts the 2025 year on the Yojimbo UHD page:
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=70585

It is the same product, so they cannot both be correct. Based on information elsewhere, it seems to me that 2025 is the correct year.

2. Yes, apologies, I misparsed the sentence, assuming that 2025 applied to all of the listed releases preceeding it. Are you certain that in the new Criterion UHD + Blu-ray releases, the Blu-rays are the same as the 2010 Blu-ray only releases? That would be disappointing if true, as they used a newer 4K scan for the UHD discs. If they didn't use this new scan as the source for the included Blu-rays, then the images will not be as good as they could have been. Mind you, it wouldn't be the first time that discs with older scans have been included in a new package.

3. Regarding removing the "a" in the OVERALL section, yes, it makes more sense to do that, as it should be plural. However, it seems that the pages haven't yet actually been changed in this way. Perhaps you did the page updates but they didn't save properly or something. I don't know, but nothing seems to have changed so far on any of the pages since my previous post, unless possibly you edited the Notes sections of the UK releases, but not the OVERALL sections.

The Sanjuro Blu-ray page is now updated, but the Yojimbo page is not:
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=18972

In the OVERALL section, it still needs the "a" to be removed:

"...has transfers from a 4K restorations..." -> "...has transfers from 4K restorations..."

Also, you didn't specifically answer re: whether the new Criterion UHD + Bu-ray box sets have the old 2010 Blu-rays (with the older scans). I am guessing, since you haven't added the new sets as separate entries to the Blu-ray pages, that they do. If so, that will be disappointing for some prospective purchasers!

It’s the old discs for Criterion. They rarely have new Blu-rays for their 4K upgrades. The recent "Wages of Fear" is one of the rare editions with a new transfer on both discs.

Thanks James.

That's a shame about the Criterion Blu-rays not being updated with the newer scans. In general, I doubt it would take a huge amount of work to achieve this either, and several other boutique labels DO usually upgrade the Blu-ray in their new UHD + Blu-ray sets if they are sourced from a better scan. Given that Criterion have always prided themselves on producing high quality products, this is extra baffling to me.
