Spy Kids 1 - Different Cuts Not Listed

Post by Paul_Rudoff »

The following is for BOTH of these pages:

Spy Kids (2001)
DVD: https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... p?fid=1381
BLU: https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=18565

There are two versions of the movie:
- Original Theatrical Version
- Special Edition (released in theaters a few weeks later)

This is not noted on either page here. To be fair, there's no comparison for it on the movie-censorship.com site, either. The only place where the different cuts are noted in on IMDb's Alternate Versions page:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0227538/alternateversions/

The difference between the two versions is just one scene, as far as I'm aware. When Juni and Carmen are in the cave...
- In the Original Theatrical Version, he pees in the water. The scene is a essentially two shots with no danger.
- In the Special Edition, the peeing is removed (the joke is used differently at the end of the scene) and the scene is expanded to have them swim past some sleeping sharks.

Here is video of the two scenes:
- Original Pee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8P2y1rrxeA
- Sleeping Sharks (skip to 1:50): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XgoYYTYWJQ

I can confirm that the U.S. DVD has the original theatrical version, and the U.S. Blu-ray has the special edition version.

I no longer have the DVD, so I can't provide the exact runtime, but I can tell you that the U.S. Blu-ray runs 90:50 (1:30:50). As the scene is 90 seconds shorter in the Original Theatrical Version, I would have to guess the DVD runs 89:20 (1:29:20).
