Extremely bad transfer!

It's bad because it's a bootleg. The film's owned and distributed worldwide by Warners via MGM. The only 100% legit release to date is their US DVD. There's also a Spanish DVD but it's possibly also a boot. Avoid anything from Pegasus Entertainment: there may be an odd exception where they've stolen from a decent source but AFAIK everything from them is mediocre.

Yep, I thought it might be. It's a shame, I believe this film used to be quite highly regarded but now the only official release is in one territory as a DVD-R. No wonder it's not well-known nowadays...

Indeed: the film itself is BD-worthy but would cost too much to bring it up to HD standard. Oh well, one decent SD release is better than none at all. And being a DVD-R allows anyone to play it, though most punters won't know that.

One of the handful of Italian boots is currently listed. It pre-dates the US DVD and also claims a film/NTSC runtime of 126 minutes so like the Pegasus is probably copied from the US VHS, US TV broadcast or, most likely, from the Pegasus itself. Amazon reviews say it has worse-than VHS quality.

If Northwest Passage was a western or film noir there'd be a decent chance of getting a BD of it from Germany or France respectively. City Streets (1931) is a superior Pre-Code noir that was also only available on a (quite poor) US Sony DVD-R until recently. Now it's on a superb looking French BD - I'll add the specs here asap.
