High definition source, restored by Don May of "Synapse Films". Some quotes from him about the new transfer (source: HTF - hometheaterforum):
*The new HD transfer was not created from 35mm materials. It was created from the original 16mm vault materials.
*The older version was so noise-reduced (with DVNR) that most of the grain was removed and smoothed out, along with detail and sharpness.
*The grain was there because of the film stock used. Tobe himself told that there was no conscious decision to make the film look "documentary-style", with the graininess, etc. He was trying to film the best movie he could. The heavy grain structure you've seen on prints, etc. were caused by a combination of the film stock used and the cheap 35mm blow-ups done by the distributor at the time.
*The framing was constantly checked throughout the transfer (exactly 1.78:1 - per the request of "Dark Sky Films") and there may be some shots where the framing isn't EXACTLY like the old one. -

OVERALL: Draw
The UK Second Sight 2023 Limited Edition has a 4K transfer (with additional restoration work), Dolby Atmos and original mono audio options with lengthy extras including an exclusive commentary and a 2022 documentary. Though note it is missing the newly discovered deleted scenes & outtakes and the blooper reel found on the Second Sight 40th anniversary edition.
The German 40th Anniversary edition has 4K transfer, the 7.1 audio and more extras than the US and UK 40th Anniversary editions, but do note the US and UK 40th anniversary editions also have 4K transfer, the 7.1 audio and lossless stereo and mono tracks.
The US "40th Anniversary Black Maria Limited Edition" has everything from the "40th Anniversary Collector's Edition" plus adds an exclusive bonus DVD though note there are some issues regarding the restoration and soundtrack (see below).
The US "50th Anniversary Edition" has two exclusive featurettes, but lacks the newly discovered deleted scenes and the "Shocking Truth" documentary and its outtakes found on the 40th Anniversary Editions.
The German Ultimate edition has a few more exclusive extras, but note that the lengthy extras on disc four are mostly in German and uses the older high definition transfer.
The French TF1 release has some exclusive extras, but does not include the 2 newer audio commentaries, has forced French subtitles, and most extras have burned-in French subtitles.
The French Carlotta release has Dolby Atmos, stereo, and original mono options, optional subtitles with lengthy extras including the "L’horreur dans la peau" documentary found on the TF1 release, though it lacks the other previously released French exclusive extras and the 2 newer audio commentaries.
There are two separate restorations available:
- 2005 2K scan from original A/B reversal rolls by Don May of Synapse Films; on all pre-2014 BDs.
- 2014 4K scan from original 16mm A/B rolls supervised by director Tobe Hooper; on all releases from 2014 (40th Anniversary editions) onwards.
Notes about the US and Australian 40th Anniversary editions:
- The mono track is not the original mono but is a downmix of the 7.1 remix and has an error near the end of the film (some of Sally's screams are missing and looped over with previous ones).
- There are some missing fades (replaced with cuts) to the opening.
Second Sight UK and the German 40th Anniversary editions (and other releases from 2014~) do not have these issues. -
