OVERALL: Draw
The US & UK Criterion releases include a 4K restoration of the uncensored version of the film along with the television version and some exclusive interviews.
The Universal releases include the R-rated Theatrical version, an exclusive picture-in-picture track with interviews, and the trailer. Note the US release is available in a combo pack with a DVD copy that includes an 8-minute commentary epilogue and some location featurettes not present on the Blu-ray.
Versions:
During post-production, director Amy Heckerling was forced to reframe the shot of Robert Romanus removing his underwear during the poolhouse scene approximately 58 minutes into the film to remove his nudity in order to avoid an X-rating. The Criterion release has restored her preferred framing for the first time.
The Television version is censored for language and sexual content, but includes deleted scenes in order to keep the runtime long enough for television broadcast.
Universal has lost the original mono track; director Amy Heckerling has approved the use of the 5.1 remix.
The Universal releases are missing a sound effect when Damone knocks on Jefferson's car at 8:18. This sound effect has been restored on the Criterion releases. -
