OVERALL: Draw
The Grindhouse edition has several extras, but do note that the DVD version contains only the expanded U.S. cut while the longer Italian cut is on one of the Blu-rays (which may be an issue if you do not have a Blu-ray player).
The Explosive Media release contains the longer cut of the film with the best range of language options and a good group of extra features. It also does not suffer from the brief moment of music substitution that blighted the otherwise fine Koch Media release.
However, please note that the German Sollima boxed set from Koch Media also includes an exclusive book and documentary (Italian and German only), and some other extras. However, note that this release suffers from a very brief moment during which the music has been substituted with an excerpt of the score from Faccia a faccia, midway through the film.
-R2 Italian -release has the "longer version" and Italian 5.1-track, but NO English subtitles.
-The version on the R2 Japanese box set is the shorter US theatrical version, and it has English audio (e.g. actor Lee Van Cleef speaks English).
Please see the image-comparison from HERE.
A comparison between the US Theatrical Cut and Extended US Cut is available on Movie Censorship. -
CUTS:
- R0 America- Grindhouse Releasing - No cuts - expanded US cut (94:56 NTSC) - the theatrical cut ran roughly ninety minutes while the expanded version adds three more scenes with English dubbing involving a group of monks that Sanchez and Corbett both come across (the Columbia Pictures editing memo specifies that these bits could be left in for television, presumably to compensate for TV censorship cuts).
- R0 Spain- Divisa Red - Shorter version (99:28 min - PAL). There´s approx. 34 sec. before the title sequence.
- R2 Germany- Explosive Media - Longer version (105:50 min - PAL)
-
R2 Germany- Koch Media - Longer version (105:59 min - PAL)
- contains one small scene in which the music has been substituted with an excerpt of the score for Faccia a faccia, as Corbett rides away from Cuchillo -
R2 Germany- Koch Media - Longer version (105:51 min - PAL)
- contains one small scene in which the music has been substituted with an excerpt of the score for Faccia a faccia, as Corbett rides away from Cuchillo - R2 Italy- CDE - Longer version (105:38 min - PAL).
- R2 Japan- Imagica Entertainment/SPO - Shorter US version (90 min - NTSC).
