The Recruit (First viewing; f.o.c.) – 7/10
Colin Farrell plays a bar attendant and brilliant hacker James Clayton who is recruited by CIA spy Walter Burke (Al Pacino) to become CIA agents. On a place called The Farm he and others undergo all sorts of tactical espionage trainings. Clayton is discharged after cracking under violent interrogation, which turns out to be a part of the test. His mentor Burke, however, has other secret plans for the disqualified recruit.

The first half of this techno thriller got me hooked but the rest didn’t quite work for me, especially the denouement.

Roger Donaldson (No Way Out, Cocktail, The November Man) directs.

U.S. Marshals (First viewing; f.o.c.) – 7/10
A prisoner transport plane crashes in the Ohio River. A dangerous convict Mark Sheridan (Wesley Snipes) skillfully escapes. Deputy Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones) is assigned to track down the tow-truck driver with a mysterious past, Sheridan who is later revealed to have been wrongly accused of murder. With his team of US Marshals and another special agent, the deputy launches an all-out pursuit to capture his fugitive. A deadly game of cat and mouse ensues.

I saw The Fugitive at the cinema and quite liked it. When US Marshals was playing at the cinema, it didn’t get my attention as I thought it would be a rehash. I was right. Despite that, there are three action sequences that stand out: the plane crash, the hospital pursuit, and the train scene. It’s a good watch for an action thriller and Tommy Lee jones is convincing as the unflinching law enforcer.

Stuart Baird (Executive Decision) directs.

Tower of Death a.k.a. Game of Death II (f.o.c.) – 4.5/10
After martial arts expert Billy Lo (Bruce Lee) is mysteriously killed at the funeral of his best friend, Billy’s younger brother, Bobby (Tong Lung) vows revenge and investigates his death.

It could have been a better film if the Bruce Lee footage had not been used at all. I have seen few Bruceploitation films and this may be Bruceploitation at its “best”.

Kill or Be Killed a.k.a. Karate Olympia a.k.a. Karate Killer (f.o.c.) – 7/10
A top karate fighter Steve Hunt (James Ryan), together with his girlfriend, joins a martial arts team tournament for money in a secluded desert castle owned by a disillusioned former Nazi general Von Rudloff. In the castle, Hunt and other contestants are treated as the general's special guests: being well-served and paid, and given rigorous physical training sessions for a purpose - to fight for the general's karate team against his bitter enemy's team of karate fighters. The rebellious Hunt withdraws from the tournament, against the general's command, when the general unfairly disqualifies his girlfriend for incompetence. Together with his girlfriend, Hunt flees the castle. Disgraced, the general has his girlfriend kidnapped and forces Hunt to rejoin. Being under the gun, Hunt joins forces with the opposing team of karate fighters and returns to the castle to fight fire with fire.

I remember watching this on a blurry video tape when I was about 10. Never understanding what the plot was about, I felt it was boring. After some 30 odd years, I thought I should give it a second chance! And this time, I had to admit that I enjoyed it! It’s silly but fun. Lots of fast karate fights if you like watching real martial artists exhibiting their karate skills. This is more fun than the sequel Kill and Kill Again.

Not on anamorphic widescreen DVD but there might be a proper DVD/BD release in the near future by Scorpion Releasing.

Size Does Matter Double Feature

The Giant Behemoth (First viewing; f.o.c.) – 7/10
Atomic testing unleashes a dormant radiation-emitting Paleosaurus that wreaks all sorts of havoc in London and is seemingly impervious to anything that tries to stop it!

This is a fun classic giant monster movie. I like the stop motion animation which, even though seen briefly, reminds me of other similarly-themed movies: King Kong (1933), The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, and It Came from Beneath the Sea. Cool!

Ratman (First viewing; YouTube) – 4.5/10
A highly toxic predatory rat-monkey, a mutated creation of a delusional professor, is mysteriously terrorizing a small Caribbean island. When a photo model goes missing after taking a photoshoot in the jungle, her sister (Janet Agren) flies to the island in search of her. With the help of a freelance writer (David Warbeck), she decides to investigate her whereabouts. What they don’t know is that the path they are following is leading them closer to death... by the fangs and claws of the Ratman!

This 1988 Italian shocker is a showcase of bad screenplay and directing. Watch it if you want to taste its cheese!

Cyborg (f.o.c.) – 5/10
The future of post-apocalyptic America lies in the hands of a slinger, a mercenary fighter trained in hand-to-hand combat, who is assigned to escort to a safe haven a female cyborg that can save the existence of mankind. After a band of merciless savages kidnaps the cyborg and left him for dead, crucified in the desert, the slinger has no other choice but to redeem himself and settle the final score.

This is one of Van Damme’s weakest films, along with Black Eagle and No Retreat, No Surrender. It feels like watching a drawn-out rock music video clip of a bad rock group. It’s no surprise as Albert Pyun, whose films I have never been impressed with (Nemesis, Hong Kong 97,Kickboxer 4) was the director.

Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary (First viewing; f.o.c.) – 6/10
An attractive young surrealist painter secretly lives on human blood. Preying on her unsuspecting victims, both male and female, with her beauty and innocent looks, she leaves a trail of blood-soaked murders that baffles the police. Imprisoned by insatiable desire, her lust for blood gets out of control and the only person who might be able to stop her killings is a young man she loves.

The title is what attracted me to watch this 1975 B-movie ‘romantic’ thriller, which plays like a 70’s low-budget TV drama interspersed with macabre scenes. Besides the quite unique plot on vampirism, another draw is the lead actor, Cristina Ferrare, who is easy on the eyes.

Not for mainstream audience.

88 - The Kingdom (French Blu)
This is a really more than efficient war/action movie from Peter Berg! 8/10

89 - Mustang (Broadcast)
Movie about young girls' life in Turkish country - 9/10.

90 - La Résistance de l'Air (Broadcast)
Decent French movie about a professional shooter, becoming a hitman - 6/10.

91 - The Invisible Boy (French Blu)
Not uninteresting follow-up of "Forbidden Planet" - 6/10.

92 - The Myth of the American Sleepover (French Blu)
Sensitive movie about the teenage world by the director of "It Follows" - 7/10.

93 - The Voices (Broadcast)
Pleasant horror/comedy mix from Iranian director Marjane Satrapi - 6/10.

94 - Invaders from Mars (US Blu)
Tobe Hooper's ’Invaders from Mars' can sometimes look oudated, but is still very watchable - 6/10.

95 - Amistad (US Blu)
I had never watched this "typical" Spielberg movie. Not really what I prefer from the director, but many great actors - 7/10.

96 - It Follows (French Blu)
Still not fully convinced after this second viewing - 7/10.

97 - Violence et Passion (French Blu)
Brilliant late "huis-clos" from director Visconti. I really didn't expect something like this : entertaining, but very deep - 8/10.

98 - La Loi du Marché (Broadcast)
Great interpretation by Vincent Lindon for this "social" movie - 7/10.

99 - The Rover (Broadcast)
Not really convinced by this post-apocalyptic film. Lacked rythm and ideas - 5/10.

100 - Tale of Tales (Broadcast)
A really great surprise, for this italian movie, mixing several middle-age fantastic stories. Refreshing - 8/10.

101 - The Innocents (US Blu)
Still a masterpiece - 9/10.

102 - X-Men: Apocalypse (Theater)
Not up to the best of the series, but still entertaining despite some obvious flaws - 7/10.

103 - Last Knights (Broadcast)
Decent action/knighthood film with Clive Owen - 6/10.

104 - The Green Mile (US Blu)
Better than I remembered, the three hours went so fast… too bad the blu-ray quality could be better - 8/10.

105 - Captain America: First Avenger (UK Blu)
A good introduction to Captain America's universe - 7/10.

106 - Self/Less (Broadcast)
Watchable, but soon forgotten - 6/10.

107 - Nosferatu (1922) (UK Blu)
A classic impressively restored - 8/10.

108 - Under the Skin (French Blu)
I still like this movie : very dark, very few dialogues : oppressing! 8/10.

109 - Patlabor: The Mobile Police (Series) (US Blu)
This is a good series based on the Patlabor universe, directed by Oshii in the 80s - 7/10.

110 - Fargo #2 (French Blu)
Still great, I would say this is on par with season 1, with many great ideas and actors - 8/10.

111 - The Five #1 (Broadcast)
Not boring, but not really convinced by anything in this show. Pretty disappointing after all - 6/10.

112 - Wayward Pines #1 (Broadcast)
I mustn't say too much : I didn't really expect anything from Shyamalan, but this first season is really worth your time - 8/10.

113 - Le Bureau des Légendes #2 (Broadcast)
Even better than the first season which was already good. Things get more and more complicated and could actually happen in the real world : hyper-realistic - 8/10.

114 - House of Cards #4 (Broadcast)
Still on the same level after four years! 8/10.

The Flowers of War (First viewing; f.o.c.) – 8.5/10
This is a harrowing dramatization of the appalling atrocities committed by the Japanese soldiers against the civilians of Nanking, China during the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937. It is hard not to be moved while watching certain disturbing and heart-rending scenes. A thought-provoking film about dignity, sacrifice, and valor that will stay long in your mind. Great directing , production design and cinematography. Must watch if you like films based on historical war events.

Christian Bale stars, Yi-mou Zhang (House of Flying Daggers, Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower) directs.

Alistair MacLean's Double Feature:
Golden Rendezvous (First viewing; YouTube) – 6.5/10
A cargo ship that doubles as a floating casino is hijacked by mercenary terrorists. First Officer John Carter (Richard Harris) must spring into action to stop them before they blow up the ship along with the passengers.

Plays like a TV movie but with R-rated violence.

Ann Turkel, John Vernon, Burgess Meredith, David Janssen, Gordon Jackson, John Carradine co-star. Based on Alistair MacLean’s novel.

Death Train a.k.a. Detonator (First viewing; f.o.c.) – 4.5/10
Mercenary terrorists steal a nuclear bomb and hijack a train to transport it to Iraq. An anti-terrorist team is dispatched to stop the train and dismantle the bomb.

Another adaptation of Alistair MacLean’s novel, and it’s a poor adaptation! A TV movie that will bore you to sleep. The problem is with the script and directing. Not even the strong cast can save it.

Pierce Brosnan, Patrick Stewart, Ted Levine (The Silence of the Lambs), Christopher Lee star.
