STUDIOCANAL presents a brand new 4k restoration of the 1953 film noir adaptation of the first in the classic Mike Hammer novel series by Mickey Spillane: I, THE JURY. In the iconic character’s debut big screening outing, Biff Elliot stars as the brutal, brawling ‘one-man police department’, arriving here in digital format and indeed on tape for the very first time too.

It’s nearly Christmas in New York City but private investigator Mike Hammer is out for vengeance when his closest friend Jack Williams is murdered. Hammer vows to identify the killer ahead of the police, working his way through an increasingly large number of suspects. His starting point includes Jack’s fiancée, a beautiful psychiatrist, twin socialite sisters, and a gangster. But as he tracks them down, so too does the murderer, creating a dangerous game of cat and mouse.

Rated ‘X’ on its initial release, this gritty, hard-to-find crime thriller gem was directed by the legendary Harry Essex (who wrote genre classics It Came from Outer Space and Creature from the Black Lagoon), beautifully filmed in monochrome by Oscar-winning cinematographer John Alton, and features a cameo from Hollywood character actor favourite Elisha Cook Jr (The Killing). Ripe for rediscovery by afficianadoes of hard-boiled 1950s noir, and packed with a host of new special features, this immaculate restoration is a must-own for discerning cult film fans.

INTRODUCING RADIANCE FILMS - A BRAND NEW LABEL RELEASING THE BEST WORLD CINEMA, CULT CLASSICS AND REDISCOVERED GEMS

Francesco Simeoni, drawing on over two decades worth of experience in the world of film distribution, has launched the new Blu-ray label Radiance Films, in a bid to release films that otherwise might not see the light of day. Utilising his expert knowledge of where and how to source visionary filmmaking, some of it ultra-rare, and driven by a desire to shine a light on these wonderful, and sometimes wonderfully-obscure titles, Radiance Films is an idiosyncratic and adventurous new label. As Fran himself says, "Why can’t these films be released, if done properly? I want to explore lesser trodden paths, areas of cinema that have never been touched before."

At the start of next year, Radiance Films will launch with the great Palme d’Or winning film The Working Class Goes to Heaven, starring Gian Maria Volonte, making its UK Blu-ray debut; and the outstanding Yakuza film Big Time Gambling Boss, that Paul Schrader thinks is best of its genre, and that Yukio Mishima called a masterpiece, presented for the first time ever on Blu-ray with a brand new restoration. Both titles are packed with thoughtfully curated extras featuring passionate cineastes, with stylish packaging (with a removable OBI strip allowing the cover to be free of text and certification), superbly designed new covers and collectible booklets, and will be available from 2nd January 2023.

Cult Epics has also finally received permission from the Estate of Serge Gainsbourg and will reissue Madame Claude on Blu-ray with a Bonus CD of the long-out-of-print original soundtrack by Serge Gainsbourg with Jane Birkin on vocals (limited to 1,000 copies).

Following the worldwide smashes Emmanuelle (1974) and The Story of O (1975), influential French filmmaker Just Jaeckin returned in 1977 with the sensual real-life drama Madame Claude. In HIGH CRIME, Vice-Commissioner Belli (Nero), the assistant chief inspector in Genoa, is investigating a series of crimes committed by a drug-running gang. He approaches the apparently reformed old-fashioned gangster Cafiero (Fernando Rey) for information on the gang, not knowing that Cafiero plans to take care of them himself. When Belli's boss is murdered, he takes over as Commissioner and fights on, hoping for a chance to avenge his boss and take down the underworld organisation.
