Celebrate the Festive Season with Six Classic Films From Legendary Directors

On December 12th, Arrow Video invites THE WARRIORS to come out and play in a new 4K UHD Blu-ray release and Limited Edition Blu-ray set. The action-thriller sets feature exclusive new 4K remasters of both the theatrical cut and the 2005 alternate version of the film sourced from the original camera negative, approved by director Walter Hill. After the assassination of respected gang leader Cyrus, the Warriors are framed for the murder and must traverse the boroughs of New York on foot to get back home to Coney Island. Hill’s thrilling and visually stunning adaptation of Sol Yurick’s novel (itself a retelling of the Greek story of Anabasis) features performances by Michael Beck, James Remar, Deborah Van Valkenburgh, and David Patrick Kelly.

The two-disc 4K UHD Blu-ray / Blu-ray Limited Edition set’s bonus content includes a 100-page collector’s book containing new writing by film critic Dennis Cozzalio plus select archival material; limited edition packaging with a reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Laurie Greasley; a double-sided fold-out poster with original and newly commissioned artwork by Laurie Greasley; 6 postcard-sized artcards; and gang logo stickers.

On December 5th, Arrow Video delivers director John Schlesinger’s classic drama, THE DAY OF THE LOCUST, on Blu-ray for the first time, newly remastered in 2K from the original negative. This adaptation from screenwriter Waldo Salt, based on the 1939 novel of the same name by Nathanael West, offers a nightmarish depiction of Hollywood. An aspiring starlet (Karen Black, nominated for a Golden Globe for this performance) makes a slow descent into the darkest recesses of Hollywood’s broken dreams. The film features stunning performances from an all-star cast, including Donald Sutherland, Burgess Meredith, William Atherton, Geraldine Page, Jackie Earle Haley, Bo Hopkins, Richard Dysart, and Pepe Serna.

On December 12th, Arrow Video proudly presents the newest addition to their Italian Western box set series, SAVAGE GUNS: FOUR CLASSIC WESTERNS VOLUME 3 (Limited Edition). Quickly finding herself broke and a fish out of water, she moves into a youth hostel for gaijin (foreigners) and takes up work as a hostess at a karaoke bar. Just when she’s at her breaking point, she meets Hiro (Diamond Yukai), a rock ‘n’ roller whose band is looking for their big break. They form a romantic and musical connection and Hiro convinces Wendy to become their lead singer. Through a combination of hustle and luck, they stumble into their 15 minutes of fame, but Wendy soon comes to realize that being a gaijin rocker may be nothing more than a passing fad. Like the Royal Theater in The Last Picture Show and the title movie house in Cinema Paradiso, the Fu-Ho is shutting down for good. The Fu-Ho’s valedictory screening is King Hu’s 1967 wuxia epic Dragon Inn, playing to a motley smattering of spectators. The standard grievances persist: patrons snack noisily and remove their shoes, treating this temple of cinema like their living room. The sense that moviegoing as a communal experience is slipping away takes on a powerful and painful resonance. Yet Tsai Ming-liang’s Goodbye, Dragon Inn is too multifaceted to collapse into a simple valentine to the age of pre-VOD cinephilia. A minimalist where King Hu was a maximalist, preferring long, static shots and sparse use of dialogue, Tsai rises to the narrative challenges he sets for himself and offers the slyest, most delicate of character arcs (the manager, a woman with an iron brace on her leg, embarks on a torturous odyssey to deliver food to the projectionist, played by Lee Kang-sheng). By the time the possibility arises that the theater is haunted, we’ve already identified it as a space outside of time—indeed, two stars of Hu’s original opus, Miao Tien and Shih Chun, watch their younger selves with tears in their eyes, past and present commingling harmoniously and poignantly. 4K Restoration by CINEMATEK, the Royal Film Archive of Belgium.

MADE IN HONG KONG (Fruit Chan, 1997)

The first independent film released in post-Handover Hong Kong, director Fruit Chan’s atmospheric shoestring-budget character study is a rough-and-ready piece of work shot on grainy leftover 35mm short ends in the city’s overcrowded subsidized housing projects. The result is a tough, pessimistic film, a portrait of a city on the brink that follows the drifting of high school dropout and wannabe Triad tough Autumn Moon (Sam Lee, in a star-making role, opposite a largely nonprofessional cast), who sees little hope for his future or that of his home as a newly created Special Administrative Region within China. A raw, groundbreaking drama and portrait of nihilistic youth in the same vein as Rebel Without a Cause (Nicholas Ray, 1955), My Own Private Idaho (Gus Van Sant, 1991), and The Doom Generation (Gregg Araki, 1995), the film poses questions that remain burningly relevant as tumult engulfs Hong Kong. The 4K restoration was carried out in the Hong Kong and Bologna headquarters of L’Immagine Ritrovata, made from the original camera negative with the supervision of director Fruit Chan and cinematographer O Sing-Pui.

The story follows space vixen, Barbarella, as she engages in sexy, interplanetary romps while trying to stop the evil Durand Durand (Milo O'Shea) from using the ultimate weapon of mass destruction he’s created. One of the most successful, subversively creative and enigmatic electronic bands of the early 90s, the BFI is releasing the first ever compilation of The KLF's films on Blu-ray and DVD with an array of special features and an illustrated booklet featuring rare and previously unseen material on November 6th, 2023.

The KLF became the biggest selling singles act in the world in 1991 with a series of international smash hits including acid house anthems "3 A.M. Eternal", "Last Train to Transcentral", and "Justified & Ancient", released on their own KLF Communications record label.

Produced and directed by Bill Butt in collaboration with Jimmy Cauty and Bill Drummond in their various guises as The JAMs, The KLF and The Timelords, one of the most successful, subversively creative and enigmatic electronic bands of the early 90s, "23 Seconds to Eternity" takes viewers on a film journey through the collected music videos and short features including "The White Room (1989)", "The Rites of Mu" (1991), narrated by Martin Sheen and the previously unreleased "Krash" (1992). Also included are the world famous music videos for the hit singles "3 A.M. Eternal", "What Time is Love?" and "Justified & Ancient".

Rich with multi-layered symbolism and apocalyptic imagery, The Third Part of the Night is Żuławski’s highly influential debut feature film. After his whole family is slaughtered during the Nazi-occupation of Poland, Michal (Leszek Teleszyński) decides to join the resistance but descends into madness after encountering a doppelgänger of his murdered wife.

The Devil is a violent tale of Satanic seduction during the Prussian invasion of Poland in the 17th century, which proved so controversial upon release that it was banned for 16 years.

And finally, On the Silver Globe, Żuławski’s masterpiece about a team of astronauts who land on a desolate planet and start a new society. When filming was 80% complete, the Polish government ordered the production to be shut down and all the negatives be destroyed. Miraculously, the original film reels were preserved and ten years later the film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival to great acclaim.
